The Admonitions of King Oedipus And straightway music and singing beguile the immortals. All the Muses together, voice answering heavenly voice, Hymn the undying gifts of the gods and the sufferings of men, Who, enduring so much at the hands of the gods everlasting, Live heedless and helpless, unable to find for themselves Either a cure for death or a bulwark against old age. --Homeric Hymn to Apollo 3.188-192 There are always lessons to be learned in the annals of history. Many of these records tell us in very eccentric ways the different struggles of the time period. There are many different stories plays about unexplainable phenomenon and family issues that have occurred in these time periods. They have been explained and talked about as works of gods, fate, and bad omens however; those anomalies are explained further by scientific discoveries and analytical digging though the texts. The play King Oedipus, written by Sophocles, has various situations explained in those times as a curse on the land by some bad deed or unexplained death. There is also a very intricate link between how fate and religious views help characters make decisions throughout the storyline. There are new character traits that are formed from these decisions such as the Oedipus complex that stem from this story. Pride and hubris were very interesting topics in stories of this age. This was that the work of gods to make an example out of heroes whose pride brings them to their knees. In Oedipus the King, the curse of povert... ... middle of paper ... ... Jocasta and Oedipus. These types of lessons are the reasons why stories like these have lasted for centuries.
