The idea of independence and autonomy had played a great role in destroying family connections across generations. Immigrant families have been coming to the United States for decades now. The connections across the family members in generations are not as they used to be because of the concept of independence and autonomy. This idea has damaged family connections by causing a huge gap among generations. In the article “Unaccustomed Earth” the author Jhumpa Lahiri presents an immigrant family that struggled in maintaining its connections from being lost by the problems caused by the idea of independence and autonomy. She adds that this closeness led to more conflicts after Dadu rejected the offer Ruma made for him to stay with them. Lahiri concludes that Dadu’s decision had crushed Ruma’s and her son’s hope of developing the bond further more. Consequently, Independence and autonomy were harmful to Ruma’s family because it crashed the relationship Ruma had with her father despite the efforts made by Ruma, and it destroyed Akash’s hope in developing the bond he started to develop with his grandparent. First of all, this concept of independence and autonomy had played a major part on the loss of connection between Ruma and Dadu, and destroyed the relationship they had. The author explains that the loss of connections between Ruma and her father, Dadu, was caused by the newly found Dadu’s independence and not having family responsibility, and not bothering to communicate frequently to his daughter. She says, “After her mother’s death it was Ruma who assumed the duty of speaking to her father every evening, asking how his day had gone” (4). This shows that the communication was only one sided, and Dadu’s independence made it for him not to take interest in contacting
No one knows what will happen in his or her life whether it is a trivial family dispute or a civil war. Ishmael Beah and Mariatu Kamara are both child victims of war with extremely different life stories. Both of them are authors who have written about their first-hand experience of the truth of the war in order to voice out to the world to be aware of what is happening. Beah wrote A Long Way Gone while Kamara wrote The Bite of the Mango. However, their autobiographies give different information to their readers because of different points of view. Since the overall story of Ishmael Beah includes many psychological and physical aspects of war, his book is more influential and informative to the world than Kamara’s book.
For thousands of years people have left their home country in search of a land of milk and honey. Immigrants today still equate the country they are immigrating to with the Promised Land or the land of milk and honey. While many times this Promised Land dream comes true, other times the reality is much different than the dream. Immigration is not always a perfect journey. There are many reasons why families immigrate and there are perception differences about immigration and the New World that create difficulties and often separate generations in the immigrating family. Anzia Yezierska creates an immigration story based on a Jewish family that is less than ideal. Yezierska’s text is a powerful example of the turmoil that is created in the family as a result of the conflict between the Old World and the New World.

The average person wants one thing more than anything else, and that thing is to belong. Usha, a young girl from Calcutta, is no different. Already trying the find her place in the world, Usha must now assimilate into cultural society within the United States. Usha’s uncle, Pranab Kaku, came from Calcutta as well having first come to America, his experiences start off worse than Usha’s, which causes him to join the family in an act of social grouping. With the Old World trying to pull them back and the New World just out of reach, both must overcome tradition and develop their own personal values.

Dadi, meaning grandmother in Hindu, lets us explore her family up close and personal as we follow the trials and tribulations the family encounters through a daily basis. In Noël Alumit’s novel, Talking to the Moon, he engages his readers in the life of the Lalaban family. Through the journey of the Lalaban family, Alumit lets us understand the different issues that Filipino-Americans encounter in the United States. Alumit cleverly utilizes the journeys of both Jory and Belen to provoke thoughts about family as well as different social issues; he utilizes these characters to progress the narrative arc of the novel. As the head of the Lalaban household, Jory and Belen take their journeys at times together and at times separately. Though physical journey is evident, Alumit permits these characters to travel space, time, and worlds. Through the usage of the concept of family, the journey of Jory and Belen unfold where they realizes their own realities. During this journey, the notion of the “American Dream” is contested. Alumit uses Jory and Belen’s experiences to provoke our thoughts about family, reality, and the “American Dream”. Through the exploration of these journey we understand the Filipino immigrant experience in American. These journeys also show us how different categories and identities affect our understanding of family.

In The Good Earth, by Pearl S. Buck, the symbol of land is so dominant that it permeates and ties together the entire story. O-lan acts as a representation of the land. The novel goes beyond her superficial features which resemble that of the earth. O-lan is described as having a brown hue, a simple, intent disposition, and an abounding inner life. O-lan’s practicality, perseverance, and fertility all embody the giving facets of the land. Just like O-lan, the earth is constantly supporting life and showing its resourceful nature. The pivotal role O-lan and the land play both seem to taper in Wang Lung’s view, and is put aside until they each reach a point of declination. Wang Lung views both O-lan and the land as important entities in his life, however he constantly values his land over his wife.
