Abraham Lincoln’s The Gettysburg Address and Winston Churchill’s Iron Curtain are two important speeches that are remembered for their grand deliveries and detailed content. Both of these speeches are known for rallying their listeners but their message is vastly different. Additionally, the two speeches have made lasting impacts on the nation’s history, but each in opposing ways. The speeches set new standards in public speaking.
The Gettysburg Address and the Iron Curtain are very comparable speeches, in content and delivery. Abraham Lincoln, US president, delivered his famous speech , The Gettysburg Address, on November 19, 1863 in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Only about 80 years later, Winston Churchill, British Prime Minister, gave his famous speech the Iron Curtain on March 5, 1946 in Fulton, Missouri. Both of these speeches were meant to rally the American people. Each of the speakers talked of a nation divided. Lincoln stated, “Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation, so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure.” (Lincoln, Gettysburg Address) He spoke of the American civil war with an optimistic view. He believed that America would make it through even stronger than before, with a little work. Churchill also had similar ideas. He meant to rally Americans and gain them as allies to help the British fight against communist nations. “From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, an iron curtain has descended across the Continent.” (Churchill, Iron Curtain) He talks about the Soviets being of influence to everyone on one side of the curtain and those on the other sides were not yet influenced. He wanted Americans to stay “pure.” Both Lincoln and Churchill wer...

...as given amidst a war. He was trying to draw it to a close by encouraging Union troops to not give up on America. Also, Lincoln’s speech is remembered because of its ability to use few powerful words in an inspiring way. He didn’t need long to motivate people with his compelling message. Few, if any, historical speakers have been able to touch Lincoln’s work and speaking ability. Although just as inspiring, Churchill’s speech is remembered more for content. The Gettysburg Address and the Iron Curtain have made lasting impacts of the development of history.
Both The Gettysburg Address and the Iron Curtain are known for rallying their listeners but their messages are vastly different. Additionally, the two speeches have made lasting impacts on the nation’s history, but each in a different way. They will forever be regarded as speeches that dominated politics.
The Gettysburg Address given by President Lincoln in the November following the Battle of Gettysburg acted as a call to arms. This speech gave the North a sense of pride and reassured them that they did have a chance at winning the Civil War. In The Gettysburg Address, Lincoln tells the audience not to let the men who died in the battle die in vain he tells them that their dedication will lead to a “new birth of freedom” in the nation(document D). This newly found sense of pride and hope led confidence which was something that the Confederate army was lacking at the
To conclude, “The Gettysburg Address” and the “Funeral Oration” have comparable components such as tone, forms of rhetorical devices, and both similar and diverse themes. They take place in different places as well as different time periods. Also they have different purposes of getting to the point of continuing the war. Although, they have different ways of convincing, they both have an urge to continue the war, because it must be won. It absolutely must be won, in order for the countries in either time period to live freely, without fear of enslavement. Both also state the purpose of honoring those who accepted the risk of dying, so that we could be free and live in liberty. As Thomas Jefferson once said the natural progress of things is for liberty to yield, and for the government to gain ground.
The “Pearl Harbor Address to the Nation” by FDR, also known as the infamy speech, is as good a speech as any. He attempts to rally the legislative branch to say that the United States should go to war with Japan, since they had attacked the U.S. without warning and with no provocation at Pearl Harbor. His speech was astoundingly successful, winning over all of the senate and all but one in the house of representatives. He made several good points, backing them up with known facts, which he laid out in a way that made sense logically and sparked emotion out of the audience.
Published widely, the Gettysburg Address eloquently expressed the war’s purpose, looking back to the Founding Fathers, the Declaration of Independence and the pursuit of human equality.
Lincoln at Gettysburg: The Words That Remade America "Fourscore and seven years ago ." These are the first 5 of only two hundred seventy-two words that remade America. In Lincoln at Gettysburg: The Words That Remade America, the author, Gary Wills, informed us that Abraham Lincoln wanted equality among us and to unite as one. In Abraham Lincoln's own speech, he would not mention single individuals or even top officers. Everyone was considered as equal importance and was never any different. "Though we call Lincoln's text the Gettysburg Address, that title clearly belongs to Everett." 1 This is very true, which I think is interesting. Everett who was chosen by David Wills to commemorate the National Cemetery of Gettysburg, was supposed to be the speaker while Lincoln was only the dedicatory remarks speaker. Not only did Lincoln have the favorable speech, it was only three minutes while Everett's was two hours long. Lincoln also supposedly was not supposed to be there to speak; he actually just told a correspondent that he would be present. It's amazing to believe that a two hundred seventy-two word speech would say so much to thousands of people.
Roosevelt’s speeches utilizes parallel structure to the best of his ability and makes it work in his favor. Lincoln on the other hand does not use parallel structure and his speeches take on a dull tone. When Roosevelt talks about the depression, he uses imagery to help the listeners see into his mind and see what he sees. Lincoln talks mainly about God’s purpose and how the Civil War was sent by God as punishment. When Roosevelt talks about the bombing, his tone laden with sadness and anger, the anger showing when he talks about the bombing and the response they had received from the Japanese one hour after the bombing. Lincoln’s tone in his Gettysburg Address is full of sadness as he talks about the deaths of the men who fought in the war.
The Gettysburg Address was not successful when it was first presented to those who attended the dedication for the fallen of the Battle of Gettysburg. Lincoln surprised all at the event with his speech by its shortness. The address is considered to be the definition on the ideas that the United States was founded upon. Before the Civil War began the United States were seen as only a collection of states. The Gettysburg address was an attempt to unite the nation. Lincoln passed on his belief that the nation must be united and that a “new birth of freedom” would be created, or the nation would “perish from the world” if the Union failed.
It was in between the years of 1861 and 1865 when one of the most famous, but deadliest wars in the United States happened, the Civil War. During this time Abraham Lincoln, which was the U.S. president at that given time, gave a speech known today as "The Gettysburg Address". It is also recognized as one of the most influential and best-known speeches in American History. One purpose of this speech was to honor the fallen ones, the people that died at Gettysburg and have sacrificed their lives for the sake of the country. Today we'll talk about that, the honoring of the deceased, and how the tone and parallel structure helped us analyzed that.
Abraham Lincoln wrote one of the greatest speeches in American history known as the Gettysburg Address. It was not only used as a dedication to the fallen troops of the North and South, but as a speech to give the Union a reason to fight and attempt to unite the divided nation. The sixteenth president’s handling of his speech at Gettysburg demonstrated how the effectiveness of juxtaposition, repetition, and parallelism, could bring unity to a nation deeply divided on beliefs. His speech touched the hearts of many and indirectly put an end to the Civil War. Lincoln may have been considered a tyrant at the time but he was a great leader of a nation, a war, and a democracy.
In Gettysburg,Pennsylvania on November 19th, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln gave one of the most famous speeches in this county’s history. The ten sentence famous speech was given one of the bloodiest sites of the Civil
Abraham Lincoln, Former president and also a general in the war, gave a speech to uphold and encourage the spirits of the weary soldiers in his army. The speech was called the Gettysburg Address. Lincoln was very specific and delicate with his tone in order to encourage the weak, acknowledge the deceased, and motivate the detoured.
Lincoln's "Second Inaugural Address" and Obama's "A More Perfect Union" are two speeches that attempted to express and impose some values to the audience. Although the speeches were delivered on different occasions, they both tried to persuade the audience to acknowledge some values that the speaker viewed as real and to commit themselves in other values that the speaker viewed as right. Furthermore, they both tried to speak to a divided audience.
On November 19, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln delivered ‘’The Gettysburg Address’’. Abraham Lincoln’s purpose in ‘’The Gettysburg Address’’ was to persuade listeners to finish what those who fought for died for by treating everyone else equally. ‘’The Gettysburg Address’’ is the most compelling speech due to its use of rhetorical
He addressed the world at Westminster College in Missouri, speaking on behalf of himself and not of his countries own efforts or actions (as a former British Minister of Defense). His passions about this topic drove him to address the public with his own views, rather than having a transcript written by his secretary. In his speech, he had a tendency to repeat himself, but for good reason to emphasize his views. One thing I enjoy about Churchill’s Iron Curtain is his ability to profile his ideas with his remarkable communication skills. He uses many clever techniques like personification, alliteration, and assonance. For example, “It is necessary that constancy of mind, persistency of purpose, and the grand simplicity of decision shall rule and guide the conduct of the English-speaking peoples in peace as they did in war” (Churchill). He had established himself as a leader in World War II by serving as the British Minister of Defense. Employing his past accomplishments and his leadership skills, he grasped the heart of the American people to not turn a blind eye to communism and to combat it whenever
Depending on the generation, who is analyzing the meaning of the address, will vary. Historians have been trying to analyze President Abraham Lincoln’s address; some say he was trying to remind the people on what basis the country was established, which was liberty and equality. Eric Foner mentions in the book “Give Me Liberty! An American History” that Lincoln with his speech “identified the nation’s mission with the principle that “all men are created equal,” spoke of the war as bringing about a “new birth of freedom,” an defined the essence of democratic government” (529). Some say this was the beginning of Democracy. Adam Goodheart states, “Invoking the images of rebirth, and stressing the ideals of the Declaration of Independence, he gave Americans a new understanding of the war’s – and the nation’s purpose” (4). Mike Wereschagin mentions, “Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address planted a marker in the country’s unfolding history. The speech recast was as a struggle for something larger than the country over which it was fought”(1). As there are many different opinions on Presidents Lincoln intent regarding this address, at the end they all seem to have some connection based on how it is
