Most college students are piled with difficult work each week. Collection of assignments, are stack carefully on the students desk ready to be completed. Let alone, a history professor later mentions that a test will be assigned in less than two days. The test makes a college student drown in caffeine;therefore, canceling all his plans due to planning a long marathon of studying. But luck has come along and studies of straight A’s students have shown effective ways to study for a test, which includes the steps of taking effective notes, finding a place to study, and reviewing for a test for a only a short length of time.
To start of, the first step to study is to take good notes. Taking good notes on a computer will decrease the time of studying, by being able to the complete notes without worrying about not being able to understand handwriting. In this book, How to Become a Straight -A Student. Cal Newport, a graduate student who earned thirty-six straight A’s in a row, explains the significance of note taking on a computer. “[y]ou type much faster than you write, so the laptop will allow you to record more points in more detail. This increased detail and readability will make it easier to study come test time[...]” (Newport 68). Taking notes on a computer will save students time for reviewing for a test. People type faster than they can write, creating an unequal balance between the both methods. In todays college classes, more than seventy percent of students take notes on the computer due to the effectiveness readability and the way you can fix and structure with color clearly the main ideas the professor wanted to engaged. Also, taking notes with “question, evidence, and conclusion” will help you create a perfect study guide ...

...astination devil,” as Newport describes, will lay on the students shoulder making he or she leave without doing any work. Particurly, study at a distant place. Newport, suggests getting drop off at a place far from home to study can benefit a student from leaving or getting distracted from friends or electronics. Newport suggests, “[i]t helps if your location is farther than walking distance from campus [...] arrange to be dropped off and picked up later, or choose a location that takes a while to reach by foot so you won’t be tempted to leave right away”(46). This method, helps students avoid procrastinating. While being away from a students home can isolate a student from his electronics and friends. In the end, finding the right place is critical for a students college career.

Team members and professionals have developed constructed lessons in the study guide so the student can achieve the maximu...
In “More Testing, More Learning,” Patrick O’Malley presents his argument in the essay of why taking major exams at the end of a student’s course harms them more than it does the student any good. O’Malley states that, “Although the last*minute anxiety about midterm and final exams is only too familiar to most college students, many professors may not realize how such major, infrequent, high-stakes exams work against the best interests of the student psychologically and cognitively.” (483) With taking midterms and final exams O’Malley claims that it puts too much stress and too much importance one the one or two days of these major tests than in the students entire term. His argument is that with less tests given to the student takes away from
In other words, two teachers may give the same assignment two completely different grades based on their own grading style. This puts an incredible amount of stress on a student because they need to complete assignments that will satisfy their current teacher, whose expectations and grading style could be very similar or very different from the student’s previous teacher. Alfie Kohn believes that the influence grades have on a student’s life doesn’t help this situation, and may even make it worse by providing students with a false sense of security about their knowledge. In her article “From Degrading to De-grading”, she states that scores on tests can be largely based on how the test was written and what skills were tested (Kohn 240). Therefore, it is up to teachers to identify what topics students must master in order to be proficient and score well on standardized tests. But when the class is not structured with a consideration for the material used on such tests, students enter the test blind to the skills that they will be expected to know and use. Anyone can memorize a list of facts off a study guide and score well on a multiple choice test the next day, but skills such as analyzing literature and interpreting a handful of graphs containing data from a scientific experiment are skills that require time and hours of instruction to master.
We see a constant struggle between students and professors when it comes to the grading scale. These differences make learning a hassle. “I am placed in the position of having to figure out new ways to trick them into learning by designing ingenious new ways to grade,” says Vogel (339). The present grading system pushes students to take easy classes. Students on scholarships are afraid of taking hard classes because they run the risk of loosing financial aid if their grades don’t meet the average (Vogel 339). Farber agrees, “Getting graded turns people away from hard subjects,” (334). He offers his readers a utopia free of grades. This new...
This goes along with the scientific study mentioned in the article that students who had two studying sessions did exceptionally well on a test given right after the sessions, but gradually forgot the material (Carey, 2010). An additional studying condition I have is to do practice problems and tests on the material I will be tested on. This connects to the reading for the reason that I am being exposed to a variety of problems, which, according to the text, is a brilliant way to review. My studying habits will be adjusted to be like the ones mentioned in the article so that I will make the most of my reviewing
O 'Malley suggests in his essay that professors should give weekly quizzes or review worksheets. The average, full-time college student takes five or six courses per semester. If every professor assigned one in class quiz or long assignment to be completed out of class each week, among other assignments the student would be completely overwhelmed. The student would have to spend so much time
The numbers of hours in a day never change nor the days in a week, but one thing that is sure to change are the things that one needs to accomplish. Many college students spend a majority of their time studying, however, numerous students also have jobs and other responsibilities they have to attend to. At the start of every semester the cycle of having to balance work and school starts up again. As soon as registration is open, students scramble to pick classes that fit into their busy lives. Even if they have managed to balanced their work and class schedules, it does not mean that stress will be absence from their life. Students who go to class during the d...
Personally, I am an advocate for cramming the day before the test, but not right before bed. Instead, I study first, do a little bit of homework, study some more, finish my homework, and then study once again. If I study a little bit each night, by the fourth or fifth night I will begin to feel as if I have over-studied and then begin mixing up each piece of information. In this essay, I have compared and contrasted both methods and it should be much easier for each student to choose a way that works best for them. Both methods can be effective, it just depends on the students’ personality in general.
Why do college students procrastinate? Nearly every student will admit to, at times, delaying work until it is more “convenient.” Often times, these poor school habits will cause the student to become stressed and unorganized. Unfortunately, students will often fall into a cycle repeating these unacceptable behaviors. This cycle leads to sloppy work performance and lower grades. Discouragement abounds at this point and, in fact, many students give up completely. College students tend to procrastinate their work due to overestimating their own abilities, underestimating their coursework, and lacking motivation.
The test taking lessons have helped me learn more about having good strategies for a test. I feel that with these lessons learned I can have more confidence to take a test and pass it. In this report I want to show why test taking is an important skill to learn. I also wanted to describe how I have prepared for test in the past. I also wanted to discuss three strategies I have learned from the computer tutorial in class and how I have changed my study habits so I can do better on test.
Multitasking with non-course material results in a student’s attention being diverted from the course material that is being taught. This can result in errors in memory for the student and also a more difficult time learning the information outside of the classroom (Kraushaar & Novak, 2010, p.1). The University of Vermont completed a study in order to determine the impacts of multitasking with a laptop during a university lecture. Through the experiment they were able to determine that “students with a high [and long] frequency of software multitasking during lectures will exhibit lower academic performance than students with a low [and short] frequency of software multitasking” (Kraushaar & Novak, 2010, p.6). This shows that repeated and lengthy multitasking with technology in particular laptops during lecture times can cause extremely negative results in a students academic performances and
Step one, to succeed in college is taking good notes. This can help students organize their study time more effectively. Because we all have experienced the, last minute studying technique. That’s when the notes come to play. Instead of going through chapters
Students always seem to zone out or fall asleep during class. Computers can be very important in class because it changes the way students learn and it also allows them to see how useful their information is. Students using computers in class can help the students remember their homework or the material they need to know for class. It can also help them keep their classwork more organized if they have more than one class. One of the pros of using computers in class is that computers can be used as a tutor. Some students learn better if someone other than the teacher is teaching them. The reason some students like to use the computer as a tutor is because they can learn at their own pace and they can also make the computer repeat the material until they understand it. They can have hands on
Stressing about an approaching deadline or an upcoming test is nothing new to most people, especially students. The manner in which both business professionals and students handle the stress is quite similar. The majority of people who often find themselves in this situation say that they stay up most of the night, if not all the night, preparing and reviewing information. As the standards for a quality education continue to increase rapidly, students find themselves having less and less time to prepare for approaching exam dates. The pressure to succeed and do well causes many high school and college students to study all the information intensively, or cram, the night before the exam while putting off sleep. Although this seems harmless, there are many severe effects to late night study sessions. Staying up late and reviewing information does more harm than good.
Tip# 4: Sleep. No, not in class; that’s a one-way street to Failuretown. Sleep is an indispensable tool in the creation of good study habits. A good sleep schedule is an excellent way to stay on top of things as it provides you with clear times of when you will be available to do what. A bad sleep schedule will leave you tired in school and sleeping at times when you should be studying or doing something beneficial. Maintain a good sleep schedule because it is hard to get out of a bad
