The Civil War was a messy and brutal conflict for the United States, with slavery being the primary factor for the battle. In the beginning of the war there were about four million slaves in the Union. With the help of Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, these Union slaves were declared free from slavery. However, because so many of these slaves were living in Confederacy territories they did not actually experience freedom until the end of the war. Lincoln tried very hard to abolish slavery, but it seems that he did not fully think through what would happen to these slaves after the war ended. In 1865 the Union created the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands to help the men and women after the war. This came to be recognized as the Freedmen’s Bureau, and was used to help slaves transition to freedom. Unfortunately, not all of its goals were accomplished.
Abraham Lincoln’s resistance to expand slavery into the West created a long period of conflict that led up to the civil war. After Lincoln won the 1860 election, the official conflict was soon to begin. Before President Lincoln could even give his inaugural address seven states from the south declared their independence from the Union, and on March 4, 1861 The Confederate States of America was formed. When the Confederate army fired on Fort Sumter April 12, 1861 the American Civil War had begun. By the end of the civil war four more states would come to unite with the Confederacy, and more than six hundred thousand men would die on either side.
At the beginning of the war about four million slaves occupied the United States. Most of these slaves labored on farms in the Confederacy. Depending on the masters, slaves were treated different. The fortunate ones w...

The Civil War, beginning in 1861 and ending in 1865, was a notorious event in American history for many influential reasons. Among them was the war 's conclusive role in determining a united or divided American nation, its efforts to successfully abolish the slavery institution and bring victory to the northern states. This Civil War was first inspired by the unsettling differences that divided the northern and southern states over the power that resided in the hands of the national government to constrain slavery from taking place within the territories. There was only one victor in the Civil War. Due to the lack of resources, plethora of weaknesses, and disorganized leadership the Southern States possessed in comparison to the Northern States,
The role of the Freedmen Bureau in African-American development during the Reconstruction era has been a polarizing topic since the Bureau’s inception. While most concur that the Bureau was well intended, some scholars, believe that the Freedmen’s Bureau was detrimental to African-American development. One such scholar was W.E.B. Dubois, who in his book The Souls of Black Folk, expressed his discontent with the actions of the Bureau and suggested that the Bureau did more harm than good. Upon further probing, research refutes the position that the Freedmen’s Bureau was chiefly detrimental to Black development. While far from flawless in its pursuits to assist the newly freed Negroes, the actions of the Freedmen’s Bureau did not impede African-American progress; instead, these actions facilitated African-American development.
In the spring 1861, years of building tensions between the northern states and southern states resulted in the American Civil War. In 1680 an anti-slavery Republican, Abraham Lincoln was elected president causing seven southern states to secede from the union. These seven states included--Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Texas--. These seven states formed the Confederate States of America. The American Civil War lasted from April 12, 1861 to May 9, 1865 and claimed more than roughly 620,000 lives.
The American Civil War was fought between the North (The Union) and the South (The Confederates), because of the South wanting to secede from the North. Lincoln's election as president in 1860, triggered southerners' decision to secede believing Lincoln would restrict their rights to own slaves. Lincoln stated that secession was "legally void" and had no intentions of invading the Southern states, but would use force to maintain possession of federal property. Despite his pleas for the restorations of the bonds of union, the South fired upon the federal troops stationed at Fort Sumter, in Charlestown, Virginia. This was the event that decided the eventual beginning of the Civil War. Despite the advantages of Northerners, their victory in the ...
In 1860 Abraham Lincoln was elected as president of the United States of America, the repercussions of which led to civil war. However it was not only Lincoln’s election that led to civil war but also the slavery debate between the northern and southern states and the state of the economy in the United States. Together with the election of Lincoln these caused a split, both politically and ideologically, between the North and South states which manifested into what is now refereed to as the American Civil War.
In the end, during the civil war countless slaves fought for their freedom by giving information and supplies to the Union Army. They also ran away to Union territory and served in the Union Army. Because of these efforts, slaves earned citizenship and equal rights. These acts also came with freedom and liberty to all African Americans. Altogether the slaves during the Civil War were able rise up and earn their
When Abraham Lincoln took office as President on March 4, 1861 - the United States was a divided country with slavery as the key issue before the nation. In order to preserve the Union, it was inevitable that something had to be done in America. The differences of the states spiraled into America's most dreadful and bloody civil war.
The Civil War began on April 12, 1861 at Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor when the Confederate army attacked Union soldier and ended on May 9, 1865 with a Union Victory. There are many events, laws, and people that provoked the Civil War. The two most important causes are slavery and the expansion of the United States causing an unbalance of free and slave states. This essay examines major events that initiated the war starting from the Compromise of 1820 to the election of 1860 and proves how the Civil War was inevitable.
The Civil War lasted 5 years, took 600,000 lives and yet there exists doubt in what is the main reason behind it. I myself feel that the major issue that triggered the war was slavery, which for the South threatened economy. I am going to discuss how issues of slavery existed before the war, how it was in the minds of soldiers during the war, and then still existed after the war.
The ex-slaves after the Civil War didn’t have a place to settle or money. They had no skills other than farming to procure jobs, so they couldn’t earn money. Freedmen’s Bureau provided shelter, resources, education, and taught necessary skills to get jobs (Jordan 386). Though the issue of slavery was solved, racism continues and Southerners that stayed after the war passed Black Codes which subverted the ideas of freedom including the actions of state legislatures (Hakim 19). Black Codes were a set of laws that discriminated against blacks and limited their freedom (Jordan 388).
The Civil War was period of change in American history. Following the warfare, congress established a federal agency named the Freedmen’s Bureau to facilitate the freed people’s transition from slavery to freedom. Southern blacks encountered the worst chaos, displacement, illnesses, poverty and epidemics, which were limiting to the bureaus successes during reconstruction (Finley 2013, 82). During the war, lack of basic needs and medicine hindered the efforts of improving economic social and political freedom. As a result, the Freedmen’s Bureau was designed to help black southerners transition from slavery to freedom. The challenges faced during this transition were enormous, as the civil war had ruined the region completely. The farms faced destruction during the war and huge amounts of capital depleted in the war. When the civil war ended, the social order of the region was chaotic and slave owners as well as their former slaves were forced to interact socially in a different way than before (Finley 2012, 82). The Freedmen’s Bureau was a unique effort by the federal government to improve the social wellbeing of the American nation. Major General Oliver Howard headed the Free...
“It is estimated that 7.7 million slaves were transported to America between 1492 and 1820”4. They were used to farm, tend to live stock, and with the rise of profitable crops the slave trade grew on a large scale. Slavery in the north was not as big as in the south due to smaller farms. The laws that governed slaves in the north where not as harsh as in the south. They had rights to bring suits in courts testify against whites and own property and pass it on. The slaves in the south had none of these rights. Many blacks risked their lives to attain freedom from the colonist, especially in South Carolina and Georgia. The first uprising occurred in New York City in 1712, when a group of slaves set fire to houses and killed many whites who arrived on the scene. The slave were tortured burned alive and killed to show other slaves the price to pay for anymore uprising against the White slave owners. It would be years later before African Americans would achieve their freedom from slavery. “February 1 1865 President Abraham Lincoln approved the joint resolution of congress submitting the proposed amendment to the state legislatures. He then issued the Emancipation Proclamation on which followed the constitutional amendment to abolishment of
The Union was victorious in the Civil War in 1865, although much of the South had been destroyed in the process. The period after the Civil War is known as the Reconstruction period which lasted until 1877. During this period, the rebuilding of the South began. The federal government set conditions that the Southern states would have to abide by in order to enter back into the Union. One of the conditions of the South’s re-admittance into the Union was that there must be civil and political equality for blacks. This meant that governments and social systems had to be re-established in these states. Freedom became a source of conflict during the Reconstruction of the South. It brought about different meanings for black Southerners than it did
The American Civil War was the bloodiest military conflict in American history leaving over 500 thousand dead and over 300 thousand wounded (Roark 543-543). One might ask, what caused such internal tension within the most powerful nation in the world? During the nineteenth century, America was an infant nation, but toppling the entire world with its social, political, and economic innovations. In addition, immigrants were migrating from their native land to live the American dream (Roark 405-407). Meanwhile, hundreds of thousand African slaves were being traded in the domestic slave trade throughout the American south. Separated from their family, living in inhumane conditions, and working countless hours for days straight, the issue of slavery was the core of the Civil War (Roark 493-494). The North’s growing dissent for slavery and the South’s dependence on slavery is the reason why the Civil War was an inevitable conflict. Throughout this essay we will discuss the issue of slavery, states’ rights, American expansion into western territories, economic differences and its effect on the inevitable Civil War.
