Patrick Henry
“I know of no way of judging the future but by its past.” Patrick Henry wrote famous and well recognized speeches. Henry was a very persuasive writer and he changed the world in many ways. Patrick Henry was a driving force during the American Revolution through his powerful and motivation political rhetoric.
Henry was born on May 29, 1736 in Studley in Hanover County, Virginia (Red Hill). His father John Henry was a Scottish – born planter. His dad educated young Patrick at home, including teaching him to read Latin, but Patrick studied law on his own (History). His mother Sarah Winston Syme was a young widow from a prominent gentrys family (Red Hill). Henry attended a local school for a few years and received the remainder of his education from his father who had attended Kings College in Abedeen.
At age fifteen Henry began working as a clerk for a local merchant. When he was eighteen, not yet having found his profession, he married Sarah Shelton who was sixteen at the time. Her dowry was a 600-acre farm called Pine Slash, a house and six slaves. Henry’s first attempt as a planter got ruined when fire destroyed his house in 1757 (Red Hill). Near his twenty-fourth birthday he decided he was going to become a lawyer. He was Self-taught and barley prepared, Henry convinced the panel of well-known Virginia attorneys Wythe and Randolph that he had the cleverness to warrant admission to the bar (Red Hill). With his energy and his talents, and some encouragement from his important family, Henry established a successful practice in the courts of Hanover and adjacent counties. When he gave that speech in March 1775 he was trying to arouse the passions of colonials who still felt usefully disposed toward Britain despite the growing threat of military force against the colonies (Godfather). In March 1775 Patrick Henry urged his fellow Virginians to arm in self-defense, closing his appeal with the well-known words: “I know not what course take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death” (History). The colonies faced growing taxations from Great Britain. For years the colonies had complained to Great Britain, but nothing was done.
Henry was a very well driven person. He used very persuasive techniques in his writings and speeches. He was a leader, he lead the state of Virginia through the first part of the war. He was a very outspoken man and he always put others before him.
In March of 1775, the words of Patrick Henry rang in the ears of his fellow Virginians. He stood in St John’s Church, located in Richmond, made an audacious public speech containing his opinions in relation to the colony’s next step of action in the war. This was not the first time that Henry stood in front of an audience to present a speech. Henry was known for speaking messages that people did not forget. Prior to this speech, Patrick Henry had made his name known by writing the ‘Virginia Resolutions’ against the despised Stamp Act. In the view point of this specific speech however, Henry spoke his opinion of the war starting and what he believed as truth. Virginia was the largest American Colony, with the House of Burgesses that was the longest-serving legislature that Virginia proudly claimed. Patrick Henry was also previously known for his incredible words and messages he had shared in the past. This speech went over the top compared to former speeches. As a known Christian man, Henry referenced an array of Biblical subjects throughout his speech “Give Me Liberty, or Give Me Death”, in which his audience could take time to deeply digest. During this era, most Americans were Christians, making it easy for Henry to never quotes scripture directly, but imply it for his audience to grasp.
Patrick Henry was known as “the Orator of Liberty” and created his name with his speeches. When colonists were divided in 1775, some were hoping to work it out but not Patrick Henry. He thought the only choice was to go to war with Great Britain. Henry uses ethos, pathos, and logos to show his clause for going to war with Britain.
In a time full of chaos, desperation, and dissenting opinions, two definitive authors, Thomas Paine and Patrick Henry, led the way toward the American Revolution. Both men demanded action of their separate audiences. Paine wrote to inspire the commoners to fight while Henry spoke extemporaneously to compel the states’ delegates to create an army. Despite the differences between the two, both had very similar arguments which relied heavily upon God, abstract language, and ethos. In the end, both men were able to inspire their audiences and capture the approval and support of the masses. If not for these two highly influential and demanding men, the America that we know today might not exist.
Henry’s stepfather got him a job in the office of the Virginia Court of Chancery. This job got Henry interested in Law. While on the job, Clay met a man named George Wythe. George Wythe had a crippled hand, so he appointed Clay as his secretary. After about four years of working under Wythe, Clay started “reading the law”, by working and studying with Wythe and Robert Brooke. Henry was allowed to practice law in 1797.
Patrick Henry’s Anti-Federalist argument had a big purpose when it was wrote. It was Henry’s way of talking about his objections to the new Constitution. He listed varies objection to the constitution and stated reasoning behind his objections to make others see his point. Henry was a liberal activist. He wrote his document in first person. The audience for his stated was for the general public. The general public that this would have been in interest to was the government, anti-federalists, the state, and any adult in general.
“Give me liberty or give me death!” This statement from Patrick Henry’s “Speech to the Virginia Convention,” delivered to the House of Burgesses, has been quoted by many, becoming almost cliché. However, the declaration is truly understood by a select few. The unjust Stamp Act passed by the British crown in 1765, brought fame and notoriety to Henry as he spoke out against the unjust taxation without representation. Ten years later on the eve of revolution, Henry calls upon the Colonial government of which he is part, to act for the betterment of the people. Patrick Henry attempts to persuade the House of Burgesses to revolt and declare war against Britain by logically convincing them that it is their natural right to be free and calling on their patriotism and pride as leaders of colonial America.

Patrick Henry was usually reported as being six feet tall, long-limbed, with “sparkly cobalt eyes and auburn hair” (Fowler). But early in life, Henry was common man. Henry was a clerk who worked for a local business run by his father and, for the most part, educated by his father, who attended a Scottish university. He was musically inclined, playing the fiddle and flute, and during most of his adulthood Henry took active roles in the military skirmishes and disputes between the colonies and the Britain (Fowler).

If you live in the United States, you probably are aware of the American Revolution. Most educated adults in America can name at least on hero of pre-Revolutionary America such as Samuel Adams, John Hancock, Paul Revere and Thomas Jefferson . But to what extent did these few men, credited with our freedom, actually participate in events that lead up to the revolution? How many countless men remained unnamed and unnoticed despite the work they put into the Revolution? These men have often been overlooked in textbooks, despite the fact most of the freedoms we have now are derived from their brave actions. But why did these men get the wheels of a revolution turning? What was the reason they had for their actions, the very ones that led America and Great Britain to begin a fight not only for freedom, but for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness?
