I can remember coming to school and hearing all my classmates talk about how much they hated going to the dentist. Going to the dentist was one thing that I have always loved to do. The sound of the tools and just the smell of the clinic was never a bad atmosphere to me, I actually enjoy the dentist. Laura was my first dental hygienist from as far back as I can remember, and she had the whitest teeth I have ever seen! I have honestly came to the conclusion that I am obsessed with teeth. With this being said, I have always felt and known that I wanted to be a dental hygienist. I am currently in my first year here at Community College getting my preq for dental hygiene. I always get the question, “Why would you want to look in somebody’s mouth all day?” After I hear this question and then I start thinking to myself. I want to be a dental hygienist because first of all someone has got to do it and secondly, I think smiles light up rooms and if I can help get more smiles in this world then that is what I am going to do. With seeking my career in dental hygiene I have great hopes of being able to help people understand and find compassion in caring for their teeth and inspiring them as Laura inspired me. When most people think of dental hygienists, the first and only thing they think about it cleaning and whitening teeth. However, that is mainly what dental hygienists do, but they also learn to do a lot more than that. According the occupational outlook handbook, hygienists clean teeth, examine patients for signs of oral diseases such as gingivitis, and provide other preventative dental care. This was reassuring because now I know that if I do not absolutely love being a dental hygienist, there are many other roads I can go down. For the future, I plan on finishing up my prerequisites and hopefully getting in the dental program. After finishing the dental program I plan to get a job as a dental hygienist. If I love it I will keep pursuing this; however, if I do not, I will then branch off and either be a representative or even teach some sort of science. The best description of a dental hygienist is a professional whose main job is to teach their patients necessary oral hygiene skills and provide great dental care. As a Pediatric Dental Hygienist, it is required for the worker to take X-rays, clean children’s teeth, and use tools to fix children’s teeth, and teach the kids how to properly clean their teeth. In dentist and orthodontist offices you will answer the phone, schedule appointments for patients, and prepare patients for the doctor. Ortho hygienist and dental hygienist both sterilize instruments and tools and assist the orthodontist/dentist. Dental hygienist clean the plaque and calculus, while orthodontist hygienist work with tighten and replacing wires and brackets. Dental patients come every six months to get their teeth cleaned with Ortho patients come six weeks. Both careers are required to get an educations through an American Dental Association program. General dental works to maintain the health of teeth while Orthodontic works to straighten teeth. Some states require additional testing and training before you work in an Orthodontics office. Upon enrolling at Texas State Technical College, I met some amazing professors who really inspired me to go for with my dreams of becoming a dentist. Even after expressing my fear of failure because I had a child, they assured me that I had it in me to do it. I had no idea how much work it would take to get to where wanted to be, but I knew that this was the career for me. It felt so good to finally know my purpose in life. Before actually starting my prerequisite for dental school my main motivation for going into dental school was to help people and I had a genuine interested in all the new technology. All the new advancements in technology that the dental industry as a whole had offered definitely reeled me in. I didn 't really know what I was getting myself into or how much dentistry has to offer until I actually started working as a dental assistant. There are specific courses you have to take and then finally try to get into the Dental Hygiene program and from there on out you talk to professors and get help. You have to try and stay on the right page and you have to believe in yourself. It’ll get hard for you and you’re going to want to give up times but you always have to think positive and think about the good outcome that’s going to come out of everything. My biggest motivation is the smile on my parents face when I walk down that aisle on graduation and when I become a Dental Hygienists. I know I can do it and I believe in myself. I will not give up on my dream.
The career I have chosen for my future is to become a registered dental hygienist. It wasn’t until I actually learned what dental hygienists do that influenced my interest from medical to dentistry. The first honest reason I was gravitated to dental hygiene was because of the salary. I didn’t really know what Dental Hygienist actually did until I did some research.
According to the book, “Clinical Practice of the Dental Hygienist”, a dental hygienist is a dental health specialist whose primary concern is the maintenance of oral health and the prevention of oral disease. A career as a dental hygienist provides a wide range of challenges where in the dentist office, the dental hygienist and dentist work together to meet the oral health needs of their patients. There are many things that dental hygienists do that you may not realize when you think you are just going in to get your teeth cleaned.
