FUN WITH SOCIAL NORMS...
As I have been experiencing life here now in Santa Barabara for school I have really enjoyed the amazinging scenic and fiendly feel it gives off with all the excessive palm trees and and young eager students my age still adjustiing to living away from home on their own. I have definatly noticed many new changes from back in Berkely and have noticed how the socail norm seems to bend or change as you move. I have definatly noticed the difference between the poverish community and have yet to encounter someone approaching my unemployed asking for help in any way. Back home in Berkely California I would take the bart train to and from school everywhere I would go and encountered all typeso fo people all the time and would rarley go days without someone asking for help or money. I have noticed in Santa Barbara the community is definatly more wealthy and wondering what the reaction would be if I chose to break the social norm walking around campus and back where I live in Isle Vista asking for money. I decided to ask all groups of people and decided to not only try this out on the streets but everywhere I go including the buses and resturants I visit as well. I tried to invision the reactions of others and continued to wonder if the gender or age would play a factor. I figured the common question I would emmidatly be asked after approching someone would be “what is the money needed for?”. I decided to come up with two answers to record the diffenece in the reaction first one telling them I was short for the bus fair home and intended to hop strait on the bus. I finally noticed that since a large majority of the induviduals I had been asking had been exlusivly student and teenagers around for school I have been limiting mysle to a certain social network. I decided that I would try asking only adults that seemed age of thirty or older. I noticed a much different reaction between the age groups and most of the individuals I approached were very caring and concered. I was offered money alomost 4 times in a short period of time which was a huge jump from only two or three gestures so far throught the whole experiemnet. I of course denied all the money and again explained what it was I was trying to acomplish. I do believe if I was a few years older and looks the part of an adult my reactions from the older group might not have been so generous.

In order for you to continue to stay accepted in the current social society you live in today you must follow a certain set of social norms throughout your life, most of the time you do without even realizing it. As well as be followed social norms are broken everyday all around you on all sorts of different levels some harmless and some more serious and punishable such as stealing. Since I have moved out to Santa Barbara and have been experiencing life here now in school and outside of class I have really come to love the beautiful scenic and friendly feel that is given off here with the excessive palm trees on the streets filled with young eager students adjusting to the new college feel and experience finally living away from home on their own. A distinct difference I had noticed when first moving out here is the drop in disabled homeless around town asking for change or money which seemed like an ordinary social norm back home. In Berkeley I would take the bart track to San Francisco every week for school and would rarely go a day without encountering all types of people everywhere asking for help and offering something for sale. The Cash Ghetto is written to inform the reader of the differing cultures created by the economic barrier between that of the middle-class and the poor community. The information provided is well organized, relevant, and well supported although a bit of a hostile tone at times. The author provides history, cultural examples, and shares information that you would not find out by looking from the outside- in. Each topic shows how the cultures have come to be, the benefits of the cash ghetto culture, as well as the downside to this particular culture.
One of the sociological theories is conflict theory. The conflict theory deals with people's level on wealth, or class. The conflict theory says that social change is beneficial, contrary to focuses on social order. In the story of the woman and her children, the conflict theory plays a big role on the situation. Police of higher class are threatening the homeless woman. The conflict theory is a constant struggle of people of higher class over powering people of lower class, or the weaker. The police are trying to over power the woman by telling her to leave. Even though the woman and her children were doing nothing wrong, the police used their power to tell her to leave. Also the people of the area showed their conflict theory by telling the police officers to come. They must have felt embarrassed to have a woman of such lower class to be around them. They used their power of class to have the woman removed from their community. The woman wants to be there because she has no home and it is a good community to be in, but the people look at it as an embarrassment to them because it makes their area look bad for someone of such lower class to be around them. The conflict theory is unique to all other theories because it separates people into categories determined by their wealth and standards. Their status is the element that categorizes them, weather it is class, race, or gender. The conflict theory do not always use class, race, and gender all at once. Ehrenreich’s use of statistical information also proves to her audience that she in fact has done her research on this topic. She admits that poverty is a social topic that she frequently talks about. She researched that in 1998 the National Coalition for the Homeless reported that nationwide on average it would take about a wage of $8.89 to afford a one bedroom apartment and that the odds of common welfare recipients landing a job that pays such a “living wage” were about 97 to 1. Ehrenreich experiences this statistic in first person when she set out job hunting in Key West, Florida when she applied to 20 different jobs, ranging from wait tables to housekeeping, and of those applications, zero were responded to.
In Junot Diaz’s essay “The Money” he explains where his family stands economically. Stating that his father was regularly being fired from his forklifting jobs and his mother 's only job was to care for him and his four siblings. With the money brought home by his father, his mom would save some. Her reason was to raise enough to send to her parents back in the Dominican Republic. When his family went on a vacation, they came back to an unpleasant surprise; their house had been broke into. Eventually Diaz was able to get back their money and belongings. Diaz returned the money to his mother although she didn’t thank him for it, this disappointed him. Like Diaz I have also encountered a similar situation where I was disappointed. When I was in second grade, my life life took a completely different turn. My dad took an unexpected trip to Guatemala, on his return, the outcome was not what I expected.
After reviewing the article titles given for this first assignment, I believe they indicate that Sociology, generally speaking, is not only a study of diversity or commonality in traits among people; it is also a science about factors in a person’s life and how these factors culminate responses. Interestingly enough, its topics of concern seem to be directly determined by current and common events of the world. Through the invention and expansion of new ideas, popular trends and fashions through time, Sociology adapts to responsibly to service the very subjects of interest it studies; for, even the slightest change of a person’s daily experience can have an insurmountable impact on attitude, personal growth, family dynamics and basic group behavior.
The overall idea of the movie, The Paper revolves around a day of Henry Hackett, an editor of a New York tabloid, The Sun. Although he enjoys his work, the late hours and meagre pay give him plenty to consider when he gets a job offer from a rival newspaper, The Sentinel, especially with his pregnant wife, Martha Hackett nearing labour. As he races against time to cover the big story of the day regarding an accused murder of two white businessmen, Hanson and McGregor, by two young black men, his nemesis and fellow co-worker, Alica Clark threatens to foil his plan (Gagle). Through the movie, the media’s ability to distribute content to a wide audience shows that it plays an important and significant role in society as it holds the power to influence and shape the way people think and behave. The movie also shows how agenda setting, hypodermic needle theory and stereotyping take place in the media.
At first I didn’t know what to really expect from taking an online sociology class for class. To be completely honest, I thought I would be reading a lot of boring articles and then writing about them. It turned out that I was wrong. I was able to see what sociology pertains to and how it relates to our lives. It’s funny to think that almost everything in your life is controlled by someone else. Your interests, hobbies, and even clothes aren’t really solely your decision. You may be thinking “no way I am being influenced and I make all of my decisions consciously” but in fact that is not the case.
Age also does not seem to be a large factor in proxemics although in a few scenarios it appears as people with certain educational or family backgrounds will place themselves farther away from an older person out of respect. One male employee with a strong Hispanic family history appeared to place more room between himself and an older volunteer. The same employee appeared to be more relaxed and left a shorter distance between himself and the younger employees that were closer to his age group.
In times of road congestion, a roundabout is supposed to direct traffic in a smooth and functional manner. The middle of roundabouts are undisturbed and generally people do not go through it much less lounge in it. Yet, my partner and I decided this would be a great opportunity to test what other people would do if we were to perch ourselves in the middle of a roundabout. Both of us took turns laying a blanket down directly in the center of the roundabout around when there was slow in the hour. By nonchalantly laying on the blanket and acting like it was normal to relax in the center of a roundabout, it was like a performance.
Certain people are limited in income and cash. They cannot afford to expand their buying needs when they want. They live in a poverty level and cannot afford to buy a gift, a car, a house, or pay unexpected bills. Others have the same issues, but their financial problems have been handled. They all try to recover their life when financial difficulties arise.
Before I started taking the course of sociology I wasn’t really expecting to learn anything, it was just supposed to be an easy online class. However, that was not the case. It challenged my mind. I started to see sociology all around me, starting with family, then friends, and how I see things overall in general. The fact that we have an everyday life in which there are patterns in ways of living is what sets a platform for a sociological breakdown and for being a part in what we do. A better way of understanding ourselves. We use sociology in many ways every day. One central and important study of sociology is the study of everyday social life. Everyday life and sociology are definitely two different words and situations, but they tend to hold a close relationship. While sociology is the study of the human interaction, everyday life consists of everyday human interaction. Everyday life is filled by human beings interacting with one another, ideas, and emotions. Sociology studies the interactions with all of these and shows how mere interaction resulted in things such as ideas. For an example, race and ethnicity are important concepts in the field of sociology and are ones that are studied a great deal. Race plays a large role in everyday human interactions and sociologists want to study how, why, and what the outcomes are of these interactions.
