The predominant gang found in Woodbridge is known as MS-13, whose activist’s extend through several towns and city’s including portions of Washington DC. This gang was thought to be “decimated” (Jouvenal, Zapotosky, 2014), in the last few years, through prosecutions against both high and low ranking members, leaving the gang scattered and unorganized. However, since then, they have quietly reconstituted and are beginning to resurface, appearing stranger and more violent than ever (Jouvenal, Zapotosky, 2014). Gang involvement has been quite higher than past years. The 2008 National Youth Gang Survey estimates that about 32.4 percent of all cities, suburban areas, towns, and rural counties had a gang problem (Egley et al., 2010). This represented a 15 percent increase from the year 2002. The total number of gangs has also increased by 28 percent and total gang members have increased by 6 percent (Egley et al., 2010). This shows how relevant gang related activity is in today’s society. More locations are beginning to experience gang activity for the first time. Gang crime has also been on the rise in the past...

As a result, the law enforcement officials have proven to have a lack of empathy and the poor connection to their county. Which has provoked many citizens to speak out against law enforcement and in view of the opinion of the newscasters it has “created a climate of fear” and has left the Latin community feeling intimidated and helpless. The government has precautionary reactions to this violence and have observed the organization of MS-13. The video then speaks of the gangs as “domestic terrorists” with the most threatening crimes, such as the piling unsolved homicide cases, which have led to many suspects. Government officials chose to state that these gang members would be eradicated from their community, by remaining fully committed to “finishing the job”.

The people documented include a mother who lost both of her sons to gang violence, a priest that has tried to help rehabilitate gang members, a police officer that has worked in Hollenbeck for five years in the gang unit, and a current gang member. For a conclusion, Homicide in Hollenbeck focuses on a juvenile exposed to gang life on the cusp of decided where they want their life to lead; gangs or freedom. Problems attributed to the high rate of gang activity and number of gangs in Hollenbeck are the high poverty rate, low employment rate, and broken families that make up the majority of Hollenbeck. With the civil rights movements of the African American race, gangs in the 1960’s grew as fighting for the attacks being made against them for their civil liberties. African American street gangs formed in large urban cities like Chicago and New York. They formed under names in New York like “Savage Skulls” and “La Familia.” Gang fights that once used brass knuckles were now advancing to the use of guns (ncjrs.gov). The access to and easy access to automobiles, and lethal weapons, led to the rise in drive by shootings. Black gangs like the conservative vice lords were in constant conflict with white gangs. As an expanding black population, they literally were able to fight their way into turfs and gangs began to form multi-neighborhood branches (Hadergon 201). The behavior displayed by street gangs added fuel to the fire for both sides of these arguments in motivations for gang members. Lorine A. Hughes and James F. Short Jr. state there is evidence that even among those affected, there is little evidence that activism replaced illegal activities and neighborhood violence. Instead, traditional activities such as theft, assaults and extortion were still carried out. Black gangs in the 1960’s were involved in racketeering and political issues, while still killing one another and assisting in killings (Hadergon 203).
The presence of gang violence has been a long lasting problem in Philadelphia. Since the American Revolution, gangs have been overpopulating the streets of Philadelphia (Johnson, Muhlhausen, 2005). Most gangs in history have been of lower class members of society, and they often are immigrants into the U.S (Teen Gangs, 1996). Gangs provided lower class teens to have an opportunity to bond with other lower class teens. However over time, the original motive of being in a gang has changed. In the past, gangs used to provide an escape for teens to express themselves, let out aggression, and to socialize with their peers. It was also an opportunity for teens to control their territory and fit in (Johnson, Muhlhausen, 2005). In the past, authorities would only focus on symptoms of gang violence and not the root. They would focus on arresting crime members instead of preventing gang violence. Gangs are beginning to expand from inner-city blo...
The Gangster Disciples and the MS13 are two of the most notorious street gangs formed in the United States. These two groups are involved in a wide range of illegal criminal activities and have inflicted fear amongst many people. This paper will illustrate both the Gangster Disciples and MS13’s origin, history, crimes, their locations and the number of members included within each of these organizations. I will also explore the connection between rational choice theory and the arousal theory in connection with the two gangs; as well as compare and contrast the two gangs.
The story, Gang Leader for a Day by Sudhir Venkatesh, is a ethnographic study of a Black King Gang in the Robert Taylor community. Venkatesh accidentally stumbles upon the gang lead by J.T. and decided to study them. Throughout his journey he learns from the violence and illegal activity he witnesses that “in the projects it’s more important that you take care of the problem first. Then you worry about how you took care of it”’ (Venkatesh. 2008:164). He witnesses beatings, selling of illegal drugs, and exploitation of residents; but he also gained a lot of knowledge about the community. He works with J.T. and Ms. Bailey, the community leader, closely through his study. J.T. has taken a sociology class and he allows Venkatesh to shadow the gang
The main source of drug dealers is gangs and how the police come up with strategies that can stop these gangs from trafficking these narcotics. Among the most urgent and oppressive aspects of the current drug problem is the violence of gangs engaged in street-level drug distribution. Gangs are held responsible for the increase in homicide rates in the cities where they have their production is happening. They use violence not only to discipline their own employees and to intimidate and rob their competitors but also to intimidate individual citizens and groups of citizens who resist their intrusion. Exactly how the police can best deal with this aspect of the drug problem remains uncertain. One approach is to view drug gangs as similar to the youth gangs of the past and to use the same strategies that proved effective in the past. That older strategy was designed primarily to reduce inter gang violen...
The next film that we watched in sociology was The World’s Most Dangerous Gang. This film was about the gang MS13. They are a worldwide gang that everyone fears. This gang uses there mean tactics, and tattoos to show symbolic interactionism. They also mark their territories with graffiti. Symbolic interactionism is a theoretical perspective in which society is viewed as composed of symbols that people use to establish meaning, develop their views of the world, and communicate with one another. To be in MS13 you must show that you are worthy and loyal to the gang. They do initiations to let people into the gang. Initiations can range anywhere from the Person getting initiated being jumped by multiple people, to rape, or murdering someone.
