When Ruth Graves Wakefield accidentally invented the chocolate chip cookie in the early 1937 she couldn't have known just how successful her accident would become. Working as a dietitian until 1930, she and her husband bought a tourist lodge in Whitman, Massachusetts called the Toll House Inn. One day, while making chocolate cookies Wakefield realized that she was out of baking chocolate. Instead she substituted with a bar of semisweet Nestle chocolate. However, the chopped up Nestle bar did not melt and mix into the batter as baking chocolate does. Instead the pieces of chocolate had only softened.
