The Theme of Man vs. Environment in The Grapes of Wrath
The Grapes of Wrath is a novel by John Steinbeck that exposes the desperate conditions under which the migratory farm families of America during the 1930's live under. The novel tells of one families migration west to California through the great economic depression of the 1930's. The Joad family had to abandon their home and their livelihoods. They had to uproot and set adrift because tractors were rapidly industrializing their farms. The bank took possession of their land because the owners could not pay off their loan. The novel shows how the Joad family deals with moving to California. How they survive the cruelty of the land owners that take advantage of them, their poverty and willingness to work.
The Grapes of Wrath combines Steinbeck adoration of the land, his simple hatred of corruption resulting from materialism (money) and his abiding faith in the common people to overcome the hostile environment. The novel opens with a retaining picture of nature on rampage. The novel shows the men and women that are unbroken by nature. The theme is one of man verses a hostile environment. His body destroyed but his spirit is not broken. The method used to develop the theme of the novel is through the use of symbolism. There are several uses of symbols in the novel from the turtle at the beginning to the rain at the end. As each symbol is presented through the novel they show examples of the good and the bad things that exist within the novel.
The opening chapter paints a vivid picture of the situation facing the drought-stricken farmers of Oklahoma. Dust is described a covering everything, smothering the life out of anything that wants to grow. The dust is symbolic of the erosion of the lives of the people. The dust is synonymous with "deadness". The land is ruined ^way of life (farming) gone, people ^uprooted and forced to leave. Secondly, the dust stands for ^profiteering banks in the background that squeeze the life out the land by forcing the people off the land. The soil, the people (farmers) have been drained of life and are exploited:
The last rain fell on the red and gray country of Oklahoma in early May. The weeds became a dark green to protect themselves from the sun's unyielding rays.
Throughout the novel, The Grapes of Wrath there are intercalary chapters. The purpose of these chapters are to give the readers insight and background on the setting, time, place and even history of the novel. They help blend the themes, symbols, motifs of the novel, such as the saving power of family and fellowship, man’s inhumanity to man, and even the multiplying effects of selfishness. These chapters show the social and economic crisis flooding the nation at the time, and the plight of the American farmer becoming difficult. The contrast between these chapters helps readers look at not just the storyline of the Joad family, but farmers during the time and also the condition of America during the Dust Bowl. Steinbeck uses these chapters to show that the story is not only limited to the Joad family,
drop their life and move to a different state. When they arrived in California they were not
The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck is considered a classic novel by many in the literary field. The trials and tribulations of the Joad family and other migrants is told throughout this novel. In order to gain a perspective into the lives of "Oakies", Steinbeck uses themes and language of the troubling times of the Great Depression. Some of these aspects are critiqued because of their vulgarity and adult nature. In some places, The Grapes of Wrath has been edited or banned. These challenges undermine Steinbeck's attempts to add reality to the novel and are unjustified.
“Everybody wants a little piece of lan'. I read plenty of books out here. Nobody never gets to heaven, and nobody gets no land. It's just in their head. They're all the time talkin' about it, but its jus' in their head.” (Steinbeck) The Grapes of Wrath is most often categorized as an American Realist novel. In fact, the ending of this text is one of the most controversial pieces of literature written during the time period, and has never accurately made its way into film. The major theme that the author tries to portray is the victory of goodness over evil. The minor theme focuses on loyalty: Beowulf is highlighted above other men because of his loyalty to his king. Loyalty is what set apart an ordinary man from a heroic man during Beowulf’s time.
There are many theories of hidden secrets in Washington D.C. that some people believe to be real and others to be figments of people’s imagination. The group/fraternity most associated to these theories is the Freemasons. The Freemasons have been revealed in many movies but played a larger role more recently in movies like “National Treasure” and “The Lost Symbol”. With the story lines of these movies being based off of the history of the Freemasons, it has divided people into two separate groups, believers and spectators. The believers think that the masons actually planned and hid symbols into the streets and buildings of Washington D.C. while the spectators believe that these situations just occurred and are only coincidences.
...imously agreed upon to be one which does not bond individuals to a fate. Destiny is nothing more than the unknown consequence of a series of actions and events by an individual and his/ her environment. The future of every individual relies solely on his/ her choices and the context in which they live in. Those two factors fluctuate in importance depending on the situation and the extent of time that situation is viewed in. A linear path is impossible as there are always unpredictable factors that will avert or even stop an individual from the continuing on the original course of action.
