After living in years of peace, one event changed American history. The Americans were living a glorious life, but as arguments started to arise, the country began to split apart. Since the beginning of country, slave labor has been of important use. Many states in the North slowly started to abolish slavery, but the South did not want to end slavery. As more states joined the United States, debates grew if they should be free states or slave states. Many Southern states argued for the balance of slave and free states. Many people tried to compromise, but nothing would satisfy both the North and South. In the end it was brother against brother, in the fight for freedom! In 1846, David Wilmot of Pennsylvania proposed to Congress that they ban slavery in all territories that might become part of the United States. This was called the Wilmot Proviso. The Wilmot Proviso caused great concern in the South and increased a great bitterness between the North and South.Many supporters of slavery viewed the Wilmot Proviso as an attack to end slavery by the North. The controversy over the Wilmot Proviso led to the arise of a new political party. Many Whigs and Democrats wanted to take a strong stand of the debate over slavery. They joined together to form a new party, the Free-Soil Party. The Free-Soil Party choose Martin Van Buren as its presidential candidate. Senator Lewis Cass also proposed a solution that he hoped with fix the argument. He suggested letting the people decide whether to allow slavery or not. Both Cass and Van Buren do poorly in the election, and General Zachary Taylor was elected as president. The invention of the cotton gin made cotton very profitable in the South. However, the landowners still complained about a "labor shortage." The sharecropping system emerged as the dominant labor system in the South. The sharecropping system was a system of agricultural in which a landowner would allow a tenant to use their land. African Americans started to rent individual plots to do their own work. The share cropping system placed a premium on utilizing the labor of all the family members in the family. The civil war was a start of a new era. Colored people were still treated unequally, but they were no longer forced to work on cotton or other crop farms. The civil war had a long lasting effect on our nation. The United States lost many lives fighting in this war, but in the end it ended slavery and the division between our country.
The Civil War had a very large affect on all of the States. It changed men from gentlemen that went to church every Sunday and never cussed to people who rarely went to church and cussed all the time. Some of the people in the war were also very corrupt and did not do things as they should be done. The way that the enemy was looked at was even changed. Cotton was so important it made up two thirds of all 200 million dollars. The cotton gin, thanks to Eli Whitney helped remove the seeds faster, and not as painstakingly as before, this resulted in faster and greater production. A greater product wield means that the larger the workforce needed to grow in conjunction with the labor force, in this case reffered to as “King Cotton”. The greater workforce was slaves, and the invention of the cotton gin led to greatly expanding the amount of slavery in the South. The Civil War claimed an estimated 750,000 lives - more lives than all other American wars combined. If you adjust the statistics to represent the modern population, a comparable war today would result in the loss of 7.5 million lives. However, while the costs of the war were bloody and harsh, many historians agree that the war itself was inevitable. And, even though the nation failed to protect African American rights during the Reconstruction Era, the post-war amendments gave citizenship and promised equality to newly-freed slaves. The Civil War also resulted in the uniting of the Union, and the South was permitted from officially seceding. Ultimately, the Civil War was a negative but sadly inevitable historic event that cost thousands of lives but also industrialized and modernized the Southern states.

The American Civil War was different from many of the wars the United States had fought in at this time. Mostly this nation had only helped out in wars for other countries, or to just become one country itself. By the mid-1800s though, the separate areas of the U.S. had begun to develop diverse ideas regarding many important decisions. The separate areas of the Unites States quickly shifted into the North or the South. One of the matters in particular that the North and the South greatly disagreed on was slavery.
At the beginning of America’s development there were many necessities that needed to be met. Like all countries, the foundation of these necessities was based on money. How were they going to get money? How were they going to stay superior to all of the mothering countries? These were the struggles they faced. Between 1793 and 1860 boats of slaves came over to America. The purpose for these slaves was to make them do all the labor work. This labor work involved farming, cleaning, building along with gruesome hours of being controlled. The Americans controlled them so intensely because they knew that without them their economy would fall. Although slaves were cruelly and brutally mistreated, without their work and sacrifice our nation would have collapsed economically, resulting in a vulnerably weak country. This means that slavery was a necessary evil.
The first enslaved people were the Native Americans. Many societies had practiced different forms of slavery for many of years before they had ever seen Europeans. The continental railroads were designed to go through an unorganized territory west to the Missouri, which is known as Nebraska. Acknowledging the opposition of the south, Stephen Douglas, a Senator from Illinois, proposed a bill that allowed the new territory to choose to have slave or not. It later became the Kansas-Nebraska Act which accepted Kansas as a slave state. The Missouri Compromise was repealed, and slavery continued to expand throughout the Union. This time, the controversy around slavery did not ended peacefully, but created strong conflicts that divided both the major parties at the time, the Democrats and Whigs. The establishment of a new party, the Republican, which openly against slavery pushed the constraints further. This event is a clear proof that series of temporary compromises could not solve the issue. Slavery in general term consist in the state of a person being a property of another person. It has appeared for thousands of years. From the old Roman emperor to nineteenth century. Regardless, it increased by the development of societies to make profit by cheap human labor. Slavery appeared in the United States in late of seventeen centuries as a result of the trade market. These slaves came from Africa to work in large plantations for free labor in America. Historians believe that the first ship of slaves to arrive in America was Dutch to the Virginia colony of Jamestown in 1619 with around 20 slaves. They were used slaves to work in the tobacco, sugar, rice, cotton, and coffee plantations. But slavery emerged the restriction of African’s lives in North America. Though slaves in North America had their rights prohibited by their owners, they could have a small land for their own work, having family, religion practices.
Are we supposed to put a value life by their cost or by our own personal preferences and feelings? In 1619, slavery has started in the United States which creates the idea that slaves are not as equal as pets and their value are very poor to the higher social class of slave owners and caucasians. There still was segregation after the 13th amendment being ratified, where “whites” saw that the “colored” people are not desired which makes the “whites” base the “colored” people have a low value by their feelings. Today, we are considered “equal”, but there is still gender and racial discrimination within United States, so this means that people still value other people’s life differently by gender, race, and occupation. Since there has been many literature that has different positions, society values the human life by their feelings, or emotional quality.
After the Civil War, America changed dramatically. The people of the U.S. were in shock over the amount of loss, mothers, fathers, wives, and children were mourning the loss of loved ones. The war was devastating. Families were torn apart: some fought on opposites sides and some were killed. It was a dark time in American history. Political parties changed, slaves were freed, and a stronger national government was established.
The Civil War has greatly impacted society today in this era and time. It has affected our social lives, especially because of slavery. We have freedom because of the Civil War. It has especially made us who we are today because of that. Just to name a few, the Civil War gave us money (currency), abolishment of slavery, citizenship for all born in the United States.
In American history slavery has been recognized as one of the discrimination towards the African Americans, they have struggled to be a single individual and be free. Slavery has been going on throughout history it has done multiple damage to the slaves they couldn’t be independent they had been controlled by the whites and abused by them in many ways that can leave them scared or not being able to do any motions with their body.
