Scrooge realizes that he doesn't want to leave a bad reputation.with his family. In the scene present shows his family is talking about him poorly. His Family member Fred says " What's the consequence, he don't lose much of a dinner by it, I can tell you …show more content…
In the scene his family is sitting in the living room playing guess who. When they realized that they were acting out Scrooge. We know this because they said this is a mean mean man and right away they all guessed Scrooge. Scrooge saw this and made him cry. he thought to himself how can my family hate me so much. This is sad for Scrooge cause it shows him not even his family cares. Addition to that this shows him that he really needs to change cause he will grow up with no one and not get to be with his nephew and cousins. Obviously, Scrooge had a bad life but, he fixed it .Luckily, not everyone has to go though this horrible time. Scrooge is just a character but, things like this are very realistic and can happen to people. This experience helped Scrooge so much and made him realize the meaning of life. This also got his life back on track. This is why present influenced Scrooge the most. Just imagine if this happen to people all the time, don't let it
Dickens displays guilt as the main form of how Scrooge’s character develops into a compassionate person by the end of the novella. As Scrooge feels this quilt, it's purely based on the visions that the ghosts provide which further causes Scrooge to realise the consequences of his actions. His alienation from specific characters that he used to love such as Belle, “...has displaced me…” whom left Scrooge, due to his desire for money and wealth which grew. This desire grows with him as he is rejecting the christmas joy and spirit as he continuously states that Christmas is a “humbug,” but by stating this it provides comparison. Dickens depicts that Scrooge has become a better person because of fear but in the end he has become kinder. As the
Scrooge was and owner of a factory and made a whole bunch of money, but he did not care about anyone else. “Merry Christmas said his nephew, what right do have to be merry you are poor enough”. This shows that scrooge is mean to family and does not care about Christmas.
The first reason he said what he said is because of what the Spirit of Christmas Past said to him. One of the first things he showed him was when he went to a party with his girlfriend and proposed marriage. She said yes. This was before he was greedy and mean. This showed him that being pleasant and kind pays off. The spirit then shows Scrooge another part of his past, where his wife
In the beginning of the play in spite of being selfish Scrooge is also cheap, cold-hearted, and cruel. Scrooge behaves in this manner to his nephew, Fred. One way of proving this is when Fred said “Merry Christmas.” Scrooge replied salty saying “Humbug Christmas is just a time for spending and wasting money.” Not only he treats Fred badly but many more people. For instance take one of his quotes towards the Gentleman Visitor, “Are there no Jails for the poor, are there no
Scrooge was always mean to everyone. They did not like him. He was visited by three ghosts that taught him a lesson. He started being nice. “Scrooge was better than his word. He did it all. . . He was a second father. . . [to Tiny Tim] His own heart laughed.” (Dickens 64). Doing nice things for people can make people happier too. The Grinch, as well as Scrooge, hates Christmas and he expresses it. The Whos hate him for it. He takes the presents of all the Whos, he is about to throw it off the mountain. The Grinch hears a sound. It is them. They are singing, despite the fact their Christmas is ruined. He returned all their gifts and celebrates Christmas with them. He is finally loved by the Whos. Doing nice things for people can make a person happy as well. Although, Scrooge was helped by spirits, The Grinch was held by people. Recent books can be seen using traditional story’s themes.
When we first met Scrooge, we are informed, and also observe that he is cold, miserly, and bitter. However, after the visit of the Ghost of Christmas future, Scrooge changes into a generous and cheerful man. It is clear that something must have caused a man who is really nice, turn into a mean and nasty person, in this case it was the Industrial Revolution.
Dickens portrays Scrooge as being a mean old man that wants nothing to do with anyone throughout the beginning of the novel. As a young boy many family members played a huge role in Scrooge’s life. It is easy to tell as a young boy, Scrooge loved his family although his father was extremely hard on him. His sister is the only member of his home-family that has a scene in the story. It seems as if that she was the only one who truly loved him. Whenever the ghost of Christmas past takes Scrooge back to the time his sister came and told him that she was taking him back home he was filled with joy. The ghost was sure to remind him that his sister passed away when giving birth to Fred. This really effected how Scrooge looked at Fred later in life. As hard as Scrooge was towards Fred, Fred never gave up on getting Scrooge to enjoy Christmas. “His nephew, Fred, and Bob Cratchit represent the salving spirit of Christmas. They have never abandoned hope and faith” (Gold 153). Scrooge’s relationship with his family is critical to the plot of the story. All of his hard times growing up led to Scrooge’s jealousy of Fezziwig’s wealth and charm. Scrooge’s determination to be like Mr. Fezziwig turned him into the exact opposite of his goal. “Dickens contrasts Scrooge, “excellent man of business,” with old Fezziwig, the master of his apprenticeship days. Fezziwig was a “reasonable” employer; he worked his men hard and fairly, be he was able to play occasionally, and he did not he did not hesitate to spend money at Christmastime for the entertainment and jollification of his employees” (Davis 122). Scrooge’s drive ended up being his
...rt of the story Scrooge is a miserable man who hates nearly everything and everyone, he treats people like they’re nothing to him and he is everyone’s superior, emphasising how the rich would’ve acted to poor people back in the Dickensian era. The book also relates to the biblical story of “Saul or Paul” and how he changes in the Bible, the book is also important for adults as well as children as it highlights what they can do to change. The sudden realisation of how the poor were treated has lead to a welfare state being produced by the government to be more charitable to the poor and financially help them, to highlight the success of the book almost every Christmas story is based on it and there are a lot films based on the book, it shows how popular and morally correct the book is as the book is still relevant to helping those less fortunate than us even now.
The beginning of the play initiates with the death of Scrooge’s business partner Jacob Marley. Charles Dickens exaggerates Marley’s death and Scrooge’s soul feels dead and his ability to be generous, kind and to love is gone.’ Scrooge was not dreadfully cut up by the death of the sad event but that was an excellent man of business on the very day of the funeral, and solemnized it with an undoubted bargain’ , this shows Scrooge has no feeling for his best friend and his death does no phase him. Dickens now compares Scrooge to the weather, e.g. ‘he carried his own low temperatures always about with him; this shows us Scrooge is cold hearted and spreads his cold emotion to everyone.
A Christmas Carol is a very famous story.Mr.Scrooge was at his office counting all of his gold coins and writing in his book and had an assistant working with him writing in a book.Mr.Scrooge did not like Christmas at all.Mr.Scrooge use to have a partner named Jacob Marley but had died.Mr.scrooge was very nasty to others and didn’t care about the poor or the rich.He was a very selfish man and wouldn’t even spend time with his family.Scrooge was very mean and didn’t care about anyone besides himself.
During the story, Scrooge is visited by the Ghosts from Christmas past, present, and future, who shows the ill-tempered Scrooge how to be feel compassion towards others human beings. A large quantity of the story revolves around money, and it plays a large role, to contrast how generosity is viewed in society. Scrooge is incredibly wealthy, as he lives a l...
Meeting the Ghost of Christmas Past begins the first stage of Scrooge’s transformation: regretting his actions. When Scrooge is shown his younger self alone in his classroom on Christmas, he regrets chasing a Christmas caroler away from his door. The Spirit skips ahead a few years to show him a happier time. His sweet little sister Fan arrives to take him home, and this is his first Christmas in a long time that is spent with family. Unfortunately, Scrooge doesn’t see it that way; seeing this scene makes him “uneasy in his mind” as he thinks about the way he treats his nephew Fred. Instead of treating him like his only family member, Scrooge denies invitations to Christmas dinner every year and is rude whenever Fred speaks to him. He doesn’t have time to dwell on this for long, however; Scrooge has many other important things to think...
Which miraculously he does, Scrooge becomes kind. Here is a line after Scrooge tells the little boy to get the prize turkey,” I’ll send it to Bob Cratchit’s. He shan’t know who sends it. It’s twice the size of Tiny Tim and such a Christmas dinner it will make…”(272) Scrooge here buys the turkey for Bob Cratchit’s family to eat on Christmas day, which is a very kind thing to do. This second quote is to Gentleman Visitor from Scrooge in which Scrooge apologises and gives money to the poor,” Yes that is my name, and I fear it may not be pleasant to you. Allow me to ask your pardon, and will you have the goodness to add this (throwing him a purse) to your good work!”(274) Scrooge kindly apologizes for his rudeness and gives Gentleman Visitor money for the poor. The last quote is when Scrooge would give the boy half a crown for delivering the prize turkey to the Cratchits,”I’m in earnest! Go and buy it and tell ‘em to bring it here that I may give them the direction to take it. Come back with the butcher and I’ll give you a shilling. Come back less than to minutes and I’ll give you half a crown!”(272) Scrooge says this and when looking at other actions he did at the beginning, this here is a step up and really kind thing to do. As you see, Scrooge change his actions and becomes
In Conclusion, in the 1st Stave Dickens presents Scrooge as an evil, aged, prosperous man. As you read the Staves 2, 3 and 4, Scrooge’s behaviour, thoughts and attitude changes gradually. In Stave 2 a quote to show how shrude Scrooge is 'All he could make out was that it was still very foggy and extremely cold' this shows that Scrooge is an unpleasant ‘a covetous sinner’. This has an effect upon the reader as it shows how the cold weather can hurt and be distasteful to people just like Scrooge. Scrooge is described as the weather as he is like it; he hurts the people around him. Finally, in the 4th Stave he changes and he admits it, here is a quote “Spirit!'' he cried, tight clutching at its robe, “hear me! I am not the man I was.” This shows Scrooge is pleading that he has changed. I think he has transformed because of the experience he had by the four spirits.
These were some of the reasons to hate Christmas for a man like him. However, as the story moved on, the readers started to see Scrooge’s negative memories on and near Christmas day. The bad past reflected on Scrooge’s spirit during Christmastime.
