There are so many ideas that explained how racism began. According to polygenesis theory, racism rose from the different treatment for each race with existence of stratification among people. Racism can be broadly defined as attitude, belief, behavior, or institutional arrangement that favors one racial group over another (Farely, 1995). From this definition we can see that racism is not only distinction about the color of skin but can be elaborate to the bigger scope. Discrimination that assumes one race is better than another race and environment that serves different treatment for each race can be said as an implementation of racism. For example, the clearest irregular border between races happened in educational and economic opportunity, politic, health, and social mobility of people in US in 1920s. Racism definitely gave impacts to the human life, especially to the race that felt directly discriminated and distinct treat in their environment. Even if they have struggled to get equal treatment and opportunity especially during economics stringent times, society does not even care and keep the stratification exist. This condition leads to self-esteem decreases of black race because they are forced to feel that they are no way better than another race. Racism also has an impact related with psychological stress, for example different opportunity in the economic scope will lead to stress condition when people find it hard to get job only because of their skin. Studies approved that colored people will be the first one who got fired and the last hired, and this fact shows economic depression on that times. For example, when slavery was ended and the slaves were emancipated, that did not end the connotation of racism in America. In order not to look like the slaves, the white farmers started to wear wool hats instead of their straw hats (107). This part in particular struck me as being exceptionally ridiculous. It is proof that the concept of racism was digging deeper and going much further than it had been even in the age of slavery. Now that the slaves were free, the American people came up with more excuses to discriminate against them. Jim Crow laws were put into place in the sixties, and they caused segregation and discrimination to become a common theme in America. African Americans could not attend school with the whites, nor could they live in neighborhoods or houses near the whites. This became another problem when social security came into play. According to the Social Security Board, “the number of Negroes to whom aid was granted… was low in proportion to the number who needed assistance” (178). Another atrocity of discrimination was associated with the housing segregation. The “redline” meant the “identifying of a neighborhood for unfavorable treatment” (182). The houses that were in the “redline” so to speak, went to people of a different race, such as the African Americans, or the Irish. Even today, African Americans are discriminated against in jobs. If they don’t want to work at backbreaking jobs, they are considered lazy, whereas they will be discriminated against and torn down if they do want the jobs

Let’s begin with racism, which dates back to as far as humans can remember. “It may be defined as the hatred of one person by another -- or the belief that another person is less than human -- because of skin color, language, customs, place of birth or any factor that supposedly reveals the basic nature of that person. It has influenced wars, slavery, the formation of nations, and legal codes” One of the most known acts of racism was the enslavement of Africans in the new world. This racism was a result of the racist belief that black Africans were less human than white Europeans.
As a result, racism still exists today , african americans vs. whites as well as vice versa. People are constantly discriminated or passed over for jobs because of race, gender or ethnicity. The society we live in today face challenges that we have never faced before. Many people have the opportunity of attending schools, when back in the face the possibilities were very slim. Ironically, people are so well educated yet, lack integrity, character, accountability and virtues.

Humans have so many similarities, but not all individuals have respect and solidarity towards others. The idea behind this is the feeling that one is better than someone else solidly based on race, and this is what creates and enhances the idea of racism. The reason for choosing racism is to better understand the development of racism and the existing theories that have explained this issue. It is true that racism continues to persist in our current world even after so much research has been done and laws set to guard individuals from racism in all day-to-day sectors of life. In society, race clearly affects one’s life chances. These are the chances of getting opportunities and gaining experience for progression. The social construction of race is based on privileges and availability of resources. Looking at society and the formation of race in a historical context, whites have always held some sort of delusional belief of a “white-skin privilege.” This advantage grants whites an advantage in society whether one desires it or not. This notion is often commonly referred to as reality.

Racism takes away opportunities from the people. It can keep people from receiving an education, the job they want, and other needs like health care. Racism may affect the children at school, the teachers or other students may discriminate them. It can affect the parents, by not allowing them to get jobs to support their families. Having no job means they can’t afford insurance for cars, houses and health insurance witch puts them at risk.

What were the causes of racism? How did it develop historically? In order to answer those complex questions, I plan to examine the conditions of America's history from colonialism to present day society. It was these conditions of America's past that promoted the development of racist practices and ideas that continue to be embraced by many to this day.
Within all of the texts mentioned, the theme of racism is present, just like in most of today’s societies. All of the researched sources deal with the effects of racism, the foolishness of it and the fact that it still exists in today’s modern and so-called advanced world. No matter how much social attitudes evolve, prejudice, hatred and racism will still exist within aspects of society, whether it be in the heart, in the mind or in the souls of those too ignorant to realize the damaging consequences. While technologically today’s world has advanced, if society cannot overcome issues such as racism and prejudice, it has not evolved at all.
