According to the text, Scrooge is a very grumpy person, he is a very angry person. The author also states in the text that Scrooge is greedy too. Based on what I have read in the text I think that Scrooge is a cold hearted person, who is cruel and very angry all the time. The text states that Scrooge is all head, no heart. He is a miserable, bitter old miser. That tells you that Scrooge hates all irrational things. For example, like happiness, friendly, kind, caring, cheerful, bright, loving, thoughtful, and sweet. He is not a joyful person so we probably know he hates Christmas. On page 3 it says that Scrooge hates Christmas. In the text it phrases that Scrooge says “What’s Christmas time to you but a time for paying bills without money;
Scrooge was and owner of a factory and made a whole bunch of money, but he did not care about anyone else. “Merry Christmas said his nephew, what right do have to be merry you are poor enough”. This shows that scrooge is mean to family and does not care about Christmas.

The novel introduces Scrooge as a man of greed. This is shown in the first stave when Scrooge's clerk Bob Cratchit can barely keep warm by such a small fire "that it looked like one coal." Because of Scrooge's greed, he insists on storing up on his wealth by burning less coal, despite it's lack of warmth. Furthermore, one can notice Scrooge's greed as he refuses to give any donation from his surplus wealth to the poor and destitute that the collectors were raising money for. Scrooge's selfish response to the collectors was, " 'I wish to be left alone...I don't make merry myself at Christmas, and I can't afford to make idle people merry..."
He is like Victor and chooses to be isolated for how he treated others. For example, Scrooge says, “I wish to be left alone. Since you ask me what I wish, gentlemen, that is my answer. I don’t make merry myself at Christmas, and I can’t afford to make idle people merry” (Dickens 16). Scrooge is showing the reader that he is an ungrateful and a non-friendly man. The author wants us to know that he has no Christmas sprit and is selfish man that is also very stingy with his money. He also is rude to the people that come to his store. Charles Dickens describes him in A Christmas Carol as “a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, clutching, covetous old sinner! Hard and sharp as flint, from which no steel has ever struck generous fire; secret, and self contained, and solitary as an oyster” (Dickens 12). This description of Scrooge shows that he is a very negative person, that chooses to isolate himself, and keeps things all to himself. He does not care about anyone other than money and himself. He loves money and also watching his clerk; “the door of Scrooge’s counting-house was open that he might keep his eye upon his clerk” (Dickens 13). Scrooge was always watching what his clerk was doing; he was not a friendly guy. In the beginning, Scrooge was a heartless stingy old man. He refused to come to is nephews dinner party and did not donate a single shilling to the poor for meat and drinks. Saying to the gentlemen asking for a donation “are there no prisons, are there no workhouses”. He was very cruel and hated Christmas, saying that “you're a year older but not an hour richer” to his nephew when refusing. He didn’t even let his clerk stay home on Christmas saying that it’s unfair that he pays him for a day that he does not work. In fact he actually forced him to come to work earlier the day after. Mr. Marley was Scrooge’s partner seven years ago before he died. Scrooge then had taken over the business. When Scrooge walked to his large old house. He noticed when opening the door that the knocker had resembled his old dead partner’s face, Mr. Marley. This however did not frighten Scrooge. In his house he started to hear chains move, he then saw what looked like his now deceased partner, Jacob Marley. The Ghost Mr. Marley had told Scrooge that he was in chains because he had been so stingy in life and that Scrooge suffer the same pain as he did, if he didn’t change. Marley’s ghost had also said that three other ghosts will meet him tomorrow.
On page 64, we see how Scrooge shows sympathy in the quote, “There was a boy singing a Christmas carol at my door last night. I should like to have given him something. That 's All.” After being shown a memory of himself as a boy, Scrooge regrets being harsh to the boy caroling and not giving him any money. Seeing his own sadness as a child made him realize it would have been nice to give the boy something to make him happy. He will probably do nicer things in the future because he now realizes that the boy would have been upset because of how Scrooge turned him away so harshly. He is changing his actions, and regretting bad actions in the past. He wants to fix what he did wrong, and he feels sympathy for the boy. People want to be shown compassion, so in the future if he helps people out and is kind, he will not be as isolated. Another quote to show how he becomes less detached from humanity is on pages 92-93, ‘”Spirit,” said Scrooge, “Tell me if Tiny Tim will live.” Scrooge feels sorry for Bob Cratchit because the spirit says if the future remains unaltered he will die. He feels upset that Tiny Tim will die, and sympathy for Bob because his son will probably die. He probably regrets not giving Bob more time with his son. To begin with, scrooge is represented as a bitter, lonely, and greedy man on the first christmas in A Christmas Carol. In stave one it is obvious that he is lonely. This happens when his nephew comes in and he refuses the invite to his nephew's party. While refusing the invite he says that, “every man with christmas on his lips should be boiled with his own pudding and buried with a stake of holly through their heart.” Scrooge is greedy about his life compared to other lives such as bob cratchit. If you’d rather be rich with money than rich with friends and family then you will grow old and alone. When you are rich with family then you will have a shoulder to cry on and someone to tell things that are important to you. When scrooge saw his future he was so scared that it could be true, that he promised to change his personality so that future would not be able to become true. In this extract we are presented with a solitary gentleman named Scrooge. We see that he has an icy and criticising demeanour and his personality warns all human contact to keep its distance. But we also learn he enjoys this wants to keep it that way. This and all the other clues lead us to believe that Scrooge is an outsider, a miser and in general a mean human being that no-one likes or wants to talk to.
In the novel A Christmas Carol the author Charles Dickens portrays a man by the name of Ebenezer Scrooge. In the novel Scrooge is a cold hearted man that is obsessed with his own earnings that blind him from seeing the caring aspect of life. Scrooge's transformation from cold, cruel miser to warm, charitable man is effected after his confrontations with the ghost of his former partner and three spirits: the Spirits of Christmas Past, Present, and Future.
At the beginning of the novel, Scrooge is described as being cold hearted and lacking emotion.
