Nowadays kids face many problems in their lives, and one of the main problems is having a little amount of creativity in their work which deduces many points when it gets graded. Eventually, teachers start to get uninterested from reading dry and uninventive essays. This affects students’ curriculum because it makes the students think they are not good at creative writing. These type of students will usually start to get frustrated at themselves for not being good enough in the creative department. Which in turn makes them believe that they have no chance of doing well in school. This ends up ruining those children 's mindset that they have for writing their essays and writing in general. Most people don’t even think that creative writing is difficult or very important until they do it themselves. Even though our app was originally thought to help kids, our age we spread out to the idea of our app helping students in higher grades, and this may even be useful to college students and adults that have to type essays for work. There are types of positions in work that need essays to be written on a daily basis. Apps that are currently available that help with writing usually grammar editing programs like Grammarly or websites that help enhance your writing level but our app isn’t like that. Even though our app doesn’t help with grammar or nouns and adjectives, it is still very helpful for those who are good in grammar but bad in visualized writing. Another way our app is different from other websites and apps is because of, first of all, it is easier to use because of usually most editing websites only have the option to check grammar, make a higher grade level or to get a grade on it. According to Runciman, there are many plausible reasons that students and other people don’t enjoy writing. Evidence, assumptions, and language and tone are the basis for which Runciman makes his argument. Overall, this argument is effective because reliable and well known sources are used in a logical fashion. Also, the assumptions made about the audience are accurate and believable. Runciman used his assumptions wisely when writing his claim and in turn created a compelling, attention capturing argument. The article was written so that students and teachers at any level could understand and easily read it. This argument is interesting, captivating, relevant through its age, and can relate to students and teachers at almost every academic level.
In the book, “Essays on Writing”, Roy Peter Clarke writes an appropriately titled article, “I Won’t Use Writing As A Punishment, I Won’t…” (pg 3). In it, he describes the wrongful assignment of writing that students are required to do as punishment for their actions. I agree with Clarke that this is a terrible practice and teaches kids to hate writing but he doesn’t mention the reason that this is used as a punishment in the first place. It is a cycle of disgust towards the entire idea of writing that begins with students being forced to write under strict rules with the threat of their grades (and in turn, their futures) on the line. This causes them to hate the idea of writing from an early age. Then, since students don’t like writing from based on this reason, teachers believed that it was a good form of punishment. So, instead of redeeming the positivity of writing, teachers just threw it under the bus and are using it as a lesson, however, the only lesson being learned is that writing
Many times, high school students are assigned to write essays based on inspirational figures or literature read in class, often requiring the same rhetoric following fastidious rules of English and sprinkling decorative wording across pages. Obeying the formats demanded by teachers is easy enough, but it is not creatively challenging. Author of "What Should Colleges Teach?", Stanley Fish, claims it is to learn the proper ways of composition alone that allows students to flourish; however, I question if it is possible to follow these principles too closely. While preparing for one of his college lectures, Dennis Baron, a professor and linguistics at the University of Illinois, began playing with the idea of how writing has changed the world we lived in and materials and tools we use in everyday life. This lecture slowly transitioned into “Should Everybody Write?” An article that has made many wonder if technology has made writing too easy for anyone to use or strengthens a writer's ability to learn and communicate their ideas. Baron uses rhetorical strategies in his article to portray to his audience his positive tone, the contrast and comparison of context and his logical purpose.
Within the text Santrock talks about how teachers need to have writing not be a punishment but use it for positive affects in order to have children enjoy writing (page 375). By allowing students to write about anything that they want in a set amount of time, teachers can enforce that writing can be a positive experience. Students won’t be graded on what the students write about, they would be graded on sentence structure and grammar. By just grading students on that, they will feel like their ideas and stories are important.
As a teacher of writing, I realize from my experience already that I need to take a step back and allow my students some room to breathe, some room to think, possibly a model writing and an opportunity to pick up their pencils without any fears or confusion and simply write. They need to believe in their own feelings, their experiences and their own knowledge of the world around them and learn to tap into them. Without this exploration, students will remain stuck sitting with that same blank piece of paper in front of them. As a future teacher of writing, I will explore my writing by working alongside my students. I am simply amazed by what I have learned from this process already.
Creativity nowadays is unmatched even compared to something as seemingly important as excelling in academics. As time has passed it has come to the attention of many that excelling in creativity can get you much farther than simply being “intelligent”. The school system has hit a plateau in recent times as it simply tries to shove information into your head. That information often gets you nowhere and even if you complete your degree can lead to absolutely nothing. Creativity is an unstoppable force in today’s society and yet the outdated school system and ideals of those around us are leading kids with a creative mind towards a bleak and unsuccesful future.
This contributes to Pinker’s idea that the English language is failing. First, children lack the self-esteem to write a solid paper and from there, will not ask for the help they need. Lee Warren states in his paper, “The biggest factor affecting learning for lower class students is a lack of confidence based on real or perceived weaknesses in preparation” (Warren). Simply because a child is not from the highest class and they are intertwined with these high class students they feel they cannot learn as well and that shows in their work. This should not be a factor and this is where teachers need to step in with their set fundamental rules that all children should face when writing. Teachers need to apply the fundamental rules as well as ensure every child in each class feels equal and like they are capable of being a proper writer. Pinker tries to say “[that] once introduced, a prescriptive rule is very hard to eradicate, no matter how ridiculous” (Pinker 374). This is completely false. What needs to happen is teaching authorities needs to step in and fix the problems by starting with young children and following through until they are done school following with a repetition of this for all

To be prepared for any question, educators begin teaching to the test. “Fifty-two percent of teachers surveyed said they spend too much time on testing and test prep (Walker).” This can have many negative effects in the classroom. For one, creative writing is used less and less in modern English classes. Most students are lucky to participate in lab experiments, instead of spending precious time studying formulas. This can, not only create a sense of dread in a classroom, but handicap a child’s interest in learning as well.
This reading discusses a lot about the need for students, teachers, and the school to raise expectations. Expectations for students are limited because we choose them to be this way. Students are capable of doing incredible work if the teacher believes in them, and teaches them the appropriate and necessary skills to do their best work. Giving the students the needed skills and attributes to become successful writers is the first step to see the work they can do. Competency leads to confidence which will lead to students wanting to write, and when students want to write and are not forced to write, that is when we will see their best work.

Therefore in my classroom there will always be the implementation of standards and necessary knowledge with creative freedom. Students must prove and demonstrate knowledge in comfortable and uncomfortable writing and be able to identify the styles of writing. I want to teach my students every possible style of essay, and style of every other writing so they are well rounded I knowledge of how to write and how to use writing as a means to achieve an end.
