Sara Low was a flight attendant on the American Airlines plane to California when it was hijacked by terrorists on 9/11. In the article “On the Wings of memory, flight attendants story makes full article” written by Jan Ramirez, it discusses how much pride Sara’s father had for the flight attendant wings and how they resembled the service, training and so much more of this job. Sara’s her father then thought to start the Wings project, in honor of Sara’s courage and bravery serving as a flight attendant. Karyn gave her wings to Mike Low after the memorial for Sara on 9/15 because she knew it would mean a lot to him in remembrance to his daughter. Before this horrific terrorist attack on 9/11 those flight attendant wings symbolised her training and ability to serve as a flight attendant. In the article “ On the Wing of memory, flight attendants story makes full article” Mike low says “... the pride he felt in Sara’s wings, which recognized her training, qualifications and length of service, cut short by her tragic death.” (para 2) which recognizes what those wings once stood for when …show more content…
They now meant so much more and resembled so much more. They now meant the symbol of combat, and that is why Mike Low wanted to have a man/women of the service wear them during the war against terrorism. In the video “Remembering 9/11: Karyn’s Wings” Mike Low said “wings made of sturdy metal” (time 2:27) , I thought this was important because it sort of implies how strong his daughter was during this time and how strong the next person to wear them will be during combat. Those wings were worn by a man of service for over 20 of his missions and meant a lot to him. He was honored to wear them and he considered them just as important as any other pin on his chest. Mike Low had achieved his goal by having this happen and was happy to have seen that happen in remembrance of his
In 102 Minutes, Chapter 7, authors Dwyer and Flynn use ethos, logos, and pathos to appeal to the readers’ consciences, minds and hearts regarding what happened to the people inside the Twin Towers on 9/11. Of particular interest are the following uses of the three appeals.
When people see “Old Glory” flying, the experience should take their breath away. From the Omaha beaches in Normandy, where over three million soldiers stormed the German Nazis, to Iwo Jima, where the exhausted marines raised the proud flag, to the h...
I was surprised, embarrassed and dismayed all at once. Her flight made me feel like an accomplice in tyranny. It also made it clear that I was indistinguishable from the muggers who occasionally seeped into the area from the surrounding ghetto. (Staples 240 - 241)
In the first article “The lonely Eagles” by Robert A. Rose, D.D.S. gave me a great insight to who these men really were. The U.S. Air Force Association honored all the Tuskegee Airmen of WWII at the 2008 Air and Space Conference. They gave out lifetime achievement awards to all who were there. Retired Airmen such as Colonel Charles McGhee, Lt. Colonel Walter McCreary and Colonel Elmer Jones were there to share the spotlight they deserved. They left a lasting legacy to aviators and support personnel. In his book "Lonely Eagles", Dr. Robert A. Rose tells there story of America’s black pilots in World War II. The book is a story of true patriotism, remarkable combat skills. The U.S. Air Force Association express their gratitude and the nation thanks to these heroes for their accomplished and duty's more than 60 ago.
In the Article From Terror to Hope it talks about a little girl involved with the event of 9/11 and her recovery from it. A little girl named Helaina has been involved in the tragedy of 9/11. After seeing the terrible things that happened, the twin towers being destroyed, she has developed post-traumatic stress disorder. She had nightmares about that terrible day. After hard work and treatment, she is doing well. Now she is 27 and a successful journalist. Even though what she went through was really tragic, there was still hope for her.
Gone. They yelled at me. d. 286. The. Freedom bird – an appropriate term for the jumbo jets that take the soldiers from their tour because it gives them the freedom from what has been holding them back.
The 9/11 remembrance ceremony occurs in Beinecke plaza, and I stood in formation near the foot of the flagpole, watching my fellow Yale NROTC midshipmen raise the Nation Ensign for morning colors on the memorial flagstaff to remember the deaths of all those civilians who died on that day, in the terrible attack on New York, as well as all of the military service members who have fallen in the line of duty in the wars since that day. Though I did not realize it at the time, while I stood at attention among the NROTC unit squads and midshipman staff, while the Company Commander saluted, we were all honoring lieutenant Leyard’s sacrifice and his memory, which the flagstaff represents, as there is likely nobody left alive now among all those who had ever met him or known of his death in battle, and therefore his memory lives on through the plaque which bears his name, rank, birthdate, and the date and location of his death, available to any and all students, professors, university staff, and even tour groups who
After landing flight 1549 in the Hudson River, Sully said, "We need to try to do the right thing every time, to perform at our best"(Zaslow). This quote shows how Sully tried his best to save the passengers and how it helped impact their life and their family’s life. “A lot of people are saying this was a miracle on the Hudson but others said it was seconds to disaster”(Grant). During this moment, the world was thinking two diverse thoughts. The people that think it was a miracle were impacted by Sully but the others were not impacted they were scared.
I found The Impossible Knife of Memory by Laurie Halse Anderson overall very interesting. It is a realistic fiction book and it contains a lot of events that happen in Hayley Kincains life. Her father is constantly getting drunk and quitting his jobs because of his PTSD that he developed from being a former veteran. She's constantly struggling with succeeding in school and watching after her dad. “It started in detention. No surprise there, right?” She was practically homeschooled for 5 years since her dad constantly moved to new places. She also develops a love interest with a boy she was supposed to be tutored by. She developed feelings for him and he turned into her boyfriend. She has to watch out for him so her dad won't find out about
As one of the prolific artists from the Surrealism movement, Salvador Dalí was born in Figueres, Spain in 1904. From a young age, Dalí showed promise in art. As an attendee of the Madrid Academy of Fine Arts, he was classically trained in the works of Raphael, Rembrandt and Vermeer, which influenced his work with classical realism. In his later years, he eventually moved away from traditional themes towards the experimental, dream-like world of Surrealism. Artistically, he was also influenced by his Spanish predecessors such as Pablo Picasso and Joan Miro. After producing one of his most well-known pieces ‘The Persistence of Memory’ in 1931, his name was subsequently introduced to American audiences, who were captivated by the
On September 11, 2001, terrorists savagely attacked the United States of American. Thousands of individuals lost their lives as two airplanes crashed into the two World Trade Center 1`buildings and the Pentagon. This brutal act shook the world. This terrorists’ attack has changed many aspects of people’s lives worldwide. It not only affected the US but everyone around the world. During the aftermath, we learned that we lost one of our native virgin islanders. US Army, Staff Sargent Maudlyn A. White, 38, born on St. Croix died on active duty in the Pentagon. She was described as a quiet person who was independent. Not only were the Virgin Islands affected by her death, but also the financial decline the islands started to experience. After September 11, the Caribbean was dramatically impacted; security levels rose, tourism levels dropped, and people became more hesitant about travelling.
Socrates’ Doctrine of Recollection is invalid because of the flawed procedure that was employed to prove it, its inability to apply to all types of knowledge, and the weakness of the premises that it is based on.
Memory in humans is a complex process and is divided into multiple components. Different areas of the brain are responsible for varying functions relating to memory such as short term memory and long term memory, which can further be broken down into subcategories such as emotional and semantic memory. Using fMRI, brain regions that participate in memory can be pinpointed and changes to memory that are resultant of aging or other neurological diseases and the pathology of the underlying brain structures can be detected as well.
The earliest memories I have of being read to were always positive memories. I remember in the seventh grade after lunch time, always at three in the afternoon sharp. Our teacher would gather us together in a little spot dedicated just for reading. We had some bean bags and comfortable chairs facing her ready to hear the new and exciting story she would read for us that day. I loved listening to my teacher reading us a mystery or sometimes a very funny story. Other days we could pick our own book which I loved. I remember several times been so indecisive on what to read. Every book seemed interesting and some didn’t but I was afraid I would be judging the book by its cover and would lose the good time of reading a scary or amazing story.
“Alabanza: In Praise of Local 100” by Martín Espada, is a poem in praise of immigrants who worked at the top of the World Trade Center. Throughout Espada’s piece, the author committed himself in representing and celebrating the lives, stories and history of those who have dealt with a tragic loss. He successfully tells a story, and respectfully shows his emotions, logic and credibility for the individuals who were involved in the attack on September 11. He does not hesitate to argue how the society has had a lack of knowledge when it came to the tragic event at the World Trade Center, because he did not find justice in labeling police officers and firefighters as heroes. His purpose was to give credit to the innocent, hardworking people who were not recognized, but were still harmed by the attack.
