Informatics competency: Importance of health informatics In today’s health systems, technology plays a significant role in education and nursing. Therefore it is essential to study the role of nurses and highlight the necessity for suitable information technology and educational programs to assimilate with the growing stride of technology, (Darvish, Bahramnezhad, Keyhanian & Navidhamidi, 2014).The Nursing Informatics: Introduction to Concepts and Health Information Technologies course has helped me with the following concepts; the importance and relevance of health informatics, health information, data/health information technology (HIT) to the MSN prepared nurse. Also the weekly activities and course projects have help me achieve the essentials …show more content…
This particular assignment allowed me to identify from a perspective of a registered nurse what my personal top ten reasons that communication, working in interprofessional teams, and Nursing Informatics are important to improving quality and safety, reducing costs, and better satisfying the needs of patients and families. After completing this assignment I was able to discuss the significance of communication in health IT to achieve adoption of EHR technology. I also gained the ability to define the elements of effective communication plans, and describe the federal agencies, guidelines, and other influences that affect health …show more content…
According to qsen.org one of the skill includes being able to, “participate in the selection, design, implementation and evaluation of information systems communicate the integral role of information technology in nurses’ work model behaviors that support implementation and appropriate use of electronic health records.” An example that correlates with this skill/competency is project 1. Project one required the student to act as the designated project manager to investigate the feasibility of the implementation of the care robots for Health Care System ABC (HCSABC) expansion telehealth program. As project manager some of the responsibilities included evaluating the following; requirements for space, electrical needs, network requirements, internet requirements, floor surface, interface application, and measurable criteria for determining project success. Project 1 allowed me to gain the knowledge and competency regarding evaluation of benefits and limitations of common information systems strategies to improve safety and quality for
The software is currently on several Ipads and can also be accessed via a regular laptop or a desktop computer. My long term goal is to utilize this new software very frequently as it serves a snap shot of patients background , information on any updates, critical issues during the shift and any other important information staff would need at a glance is readily available. This software is only specific to my unit, hence apart from documenting in the regular organizations EPIC software I have to consistently update information on my patients in this new software being utilized on my unit. I will be able to achieve this if I make it a habit of utilizing it on a daily
“Communication is the heart of nursing… your ability to use your growing knowledge and yourself as an instrument of care and caring and compassion” (Koerner, 2010, as cited in Balzer-Riley, 2012, p. 2). The knowledge base which Koerner is referring to includes important concepts such as communication, assertiveness, responsibility and caring (Balzer-Riley, 2012). Furthermore, communication is complex. It includes communication with patients, patient families, doctors, co-workers, nurse managers and many others. Due to those concepts and the variety of people involved, barriers and issues are present. Knowing how to communicate efficiently can be difficult.
The authors consist of nurses, specifically: a Chief Nursing Officer, a Nursing Informatics Officer, and a Dean/Professor of Nursing at Belmont University. The article described how vital nursing documentation is to achieve optimal patient care, including improving patient outcomes & collaborating with other healthcare providers. Using Henderson’s 14 fundamental needs as a framework for their research, the authors proved a definition of basic nursing care and incorporated it into an electronic health record. The authors utilized a team of 16 direct care nurses who were knowledgeable with documenting ele...
As we enter the era of technological advances in the healthcare system, nursing informatics has become an essential element in the practice of nursing, and according to the American Nursing Association (2008), the managing of date, information, knowledge and wisdom are relevant to nursing. Thanks to health information technology (HIT), which has a wide-range of tools for improving care quality, there has been a reduction in care disparities, and improvements in care outcomes, including patient and family experience. In Addition, the advances in communication and information sharing has made HIT, a critical instrument for addressing the threats to safety and quality during care transitions, since every nursing action relies on knowledge based
First, the article reviews the results of the 2011 Nursing Informatics Workforce Survey. The survey was done to understanding the issues that an informatics nurse tackled each day and the tools that are used. The results of the 2011 survey were compared to previous surveys done
Poor Communication between Physician and Nursing – To optimize nurse-physician communication both need to apply patient centered cultural change; in particular, to use structured communication tools such as Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation (SBAR), and supportive technology that is system wide, for example electronic medical record (EMR). (B. Schmidt, 2012).
In today’s heath care, informatics and technology are a crucial part in tracking and improving patient care. Developing competencies through education enhances the nurse’s ability to provide safe and effective care in an environment where technology is progressing. Nursing has expanded to organizations that employ nursing informatics professionals and according to Kleib, Simpson, and Rhodes (2016), “nursing informatics professionals in executive leadership roles reported better clinical system processes and better overall quality of care for patients”. By improving the education of healthcare workers in technology, patient satisfaction and well-being will increase and as technology advances in the future,
Informatics, the QSEN competency regarding electronic documentation used in healthcare facilities is intertwined with interdisciplinary communication because of the stringent dependence on the technology of Epic to share information on a common database between professionals, units, facilities, etc. (Henry, 2016, p. 21).
Nurses play an important role in the sharing of patient information between doctors and the patients or other caregivers. Hence, they will inform the IT expert on key components that may arise with in the system.
In a highly dynamic world, the role of nurses should be studied constantly, and appropriate information technology education programs are to be adopted (Darvish, Bahramnezhad, Keyhanian, & Navidhamidi, 2014). TIGER initiative has a global inter-professional community that can access the framework provided by the Informatics Definitions document via its Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). Consequently, a feasible online instrument for self-assessment of competency levels is improved (Hunter, McGonigle, & Hebda, 2013). The Informatics definitions document collaboratively defines and documents core health informatics terminology, and this data is shared among the TIGER community across the globe. Thus, this file is important because it keeps all the nurses aligned across the world, thereby enhancing health service delivery.
Dr. Ball’s specific area of interest is clinical application of informatics. She recognized a need for an international initiative in nursing informatics, leading to the creation of AMIA. This “brought the whole field of nursing informatics into the global world” (Hagland, 2014). Through her work with the TIGER Initiative, Dr. Ball seeks to “infuse clinician education” with “IT education and training” (Hagland,
Nursing Informatics, according to ANA (2008) is a speciality that integrates nursing science, computer science, and information science to manage and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice. Healthcare in the 21st century is an exercise in high-speed data exchange, i.e., clinicians at the bedside "co-treat" with the patient's entire care team (past and present) by way of previously entered evaluations, histories and test results. Gone are the days of written charts, repeated health history questions and telephone wait times to other hospital departments. Today, nurses rely on computerized platforms with objective, up-to-date information to make informed decisions founded upon evidence-based criteria at their fingertips. Taking test for PATCH reflective paper was helpful for me to score myself in computer literacy.
Nursing informatics is a branch of nursing or area of specialty that concentrates on finding ways to improve data management and communication in nursing with the sole objective of improving efficiency, reduction of health costs and enhancement of the quality of patient care (Murphy, 2010). It is a growing area of nursing specialty that combines computer science, information technology and nursing science in the management and processing of nursing information, data and knowledge with the sole objective of supporting nursing practice and research. Various nursing theorists have formulated various theoretical frameworks or models related to nursing informatics (Wager, Lee, & Glaser, 2013). They are defined as a cluster of related concepts or ideas that establish actions that act as major guidelines in nursing informatics to issues related to the central concept of data, information and knowledge. Some of the theories that inform and assist in the framing of nursing informatics include Turley's nursing informatics model, Goossen’s framework for nursing informatics research and Staggers & Parks’ nurse-computer interaction framework (Elkind, 2009).
Nursing Informatics is important to the nursing profession since nurses’ work in information-intensive environment. The advanced technology available in recent years allows nurses to collect data from patents, share the information with other nurses and healthcare providers to provide better care and knowledge that can be gather from the information. Information can be used in clinical care, teaching environments, billing and other environments, with regards to privacy policies. The advancement in technology is allowing nurses to spend more time caring for their patients rather that spending time documenting incidents. New devices and applications are allowing patents and other healthcare providers to provide better care by allowing them to
My main interest is to contribute and teach the informatics system to the nursing students and the health professionals within the health institutions even developing a system within the community to prepare
