As a student of Writing 101, I find my goals to all be very similar in that I look to be bettering my skills. Throughout high school, my teachers prepared me the best they could for college writing, but I believe I still have a lot to work on. I would like to develop a better sense of writing with purpose, writing pieces with awareness to how it could be affecting the reader. Being able to analyze reading with ease as well as connecting pieces of writing to real world event is a skill I find to be helpful. Becoming a better research writer is another goal of mine, wanting to be able to write a long extended report without being repetitive. Which also follows my goal of wanting to use more reliable technological as well as physical sources to add as well as benefit my research writing. I also believe that I want to be able to understand how and when to use APA formatting and the differences compared to MLA format which I grew accustomed to …show more content…
I view this as a long-term goal because it’s something that I want to continue to work towards and grow in confidence. It was easy going through high school sitting in the back of the class not joining group discussions being my timid self even if I had a lot to say. Easy to skip peer and teacher editing conferences because I was so worried as to what others thought because I lacked the confidence in my writing as well as in myself. Through Writing 101 I think with the many discussions that may occur throughout the semester, I’ll grow in confidence putting my two cents in here and there. Understanding that participation is a part of my grade it’ll push me out of my comfort zone, but it will also help me work on the goal of speaking and writing with confidence. Feeling that I want to do well in my classes, I’m ready to discuss my work with my professors, accepting my mistakes and what I’ll need to improve
When going through life learning is an everyday occurrence as each day is constantly filled with information that is used throughout the course of your life. Each day we get stronger and stronger in whatever we decide to put our minds to, weather that be academics, sports, our jobs we are constantly learning and growing on a daily basis. This semester I have grown in English as I personally felt that through the English 102 course I have been able to grasp some key concepts and writing techniques that will better me for the future. In this class there was a list of goals and outcomes that the instructor felt would be achievable and the best way to learn throughout the course. In each goal throughout this process I feel like I have improved to some degree but there is other things that I do need to touch up on a bit more to further my writing education outside the classroom.
Throughout the semester I have learned an astounding amount of information. The English 101 curriculum has not only taught me how to write in general, but also taught me a variety of ways to get my point across to the reader. Before I took English 101 I was an average writer at best, but now that I am taking a class that focuses on writing strategies I feel that I have been able to improve as a writer. During the course we were taught how to write an informative essay as well as how to write a persuasive essay. The type of writing that this class has taught me will most definitely help me with future classes as well as my future in the real world. Throughout the English 101 course I have been able to improve as a writer by composing essays
Before I enrolled in English 101 there was a great deal of unanswered questions that I had regard to what it takes to end up distinctly as a successful writer. Throughout my high school experience, my English class never served as my strong point and constantly got myself frustrated and confounded. Throughout my companions, I heard positive input on English 101 class and I thought it was going to be solely about bettering our grammatical skills and composing various papers. Due to that I was exceptionally energized and excited for this class because I never had an instructor before who really helped me through my writing processes. But as English 101 class progressed on, it introduced me to different types of papers that I wasn’t confident enough to compose. From informative synthesis, summary, and peer review, I have learned how to appropriately and effectively compose each different kind of papers. As a result, this class was able to develop my abilities at an extremely high level where I could compose a good paper without much help.
The task of learning and applying proper APA style is not an easy task. The difficulty students have when learning APA has been noted by numerous educators. According to Ault (1991), “Writing APA-style journal articles or research reports is a complicated task for undergraduates because they are creating and organizing the prose while trying to follow format conventions” (p. 45). Students are trying to apply the knowledge of how to write the text of a research paper in addition to following the citation format; many times this causes errors in both the text and citations of the paper. Franz and Spitzer (2006) note “students often express frustration with formatting a manuscript according to predetermined guidelines, which can become the focus
Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about myself as a writer. This English 101 class has really allowed me to expand my essay structure and ways of thinking. This was my first college writing course and it has given me much more freedom when writing because in high school I felt limited and like what we were writing was not very important. In high school I would write essays to just to fulfill the required word or page count and to a degree I still feel like this but maybe that is why I am an engineering major but in this course I actually was able to express my ideas and for the first time really test the limits of my writing capabilities. I really enjoyed being able to incorporate my voice more in my essays and I believe that I developed my own personal style a bit from this. At the beginning of the semester my writing was quite choppy and there was plenty of room for improvement in the overall flow of my essays. Now, I use several different tactics such as outlining to create better connections between paragraphs. I believe I was able to move beyond many of the high school ways of writing and make general improvements to my essays.
First, my goal for English 100 is to become a better writer. For example, using free writing gives the ability to write about anything that comes to my mind or expresses how one feels. Free writing is a prewriting technique that is used mostly in all English classes whether is high school, or college free writing helps one practice writing for certain types of class assignments, because you can recall what he /she wrote. Also, you can look back to see did he/she make any mistake such as grammatical, punctuation, misspelling, etc. on their writing. Free writing is a way to improve your English writing skills. Another way to become a better writer for me is to form a studying group with fellow classmates, exchanging paper with classmates and
As writers, many students write to the expectations of their professors and not to their fullest potential. Throughout English 101 I had been writing only to please my professor or to fill the basic requirement to pass English. I always felt that my writing ability was never enough for my professors throughout the previous years. They always wanted clear and concise essays, which for some reason was unreachable by me. However, starting college and taking English 101 helped me with my weaknesses and changed my technique of writing essays. My experience in English 101 taught me to write to my fullest potential and to write what I felt; rather then writing what was required.
Introduction to APA format is something that I had to relearn. I do remember using the APA format during my associates program. Once I decided to major in business administration the MLT format was preferred.
As a student who is normally drawn to the areas of science and math, I didn't really know what to expect in regards to my English 101 class. I used to not value the power of the written and spoken word, but over the past couple years I have definitely gained more respect for the ability to communicate effectively. After having this change in perspective I really wanted to improve my own communication skills, specifically in the areas of writing and interpreting what I read. I have never considered myself a good writer or reader, so at the beginning of the semester I was looking forward to gaining new skills in these areas, but I was also hesitant because this was my first English class as a college student.
At Smyrna High I was in several Honors level classes, where I learned APA and the proper writing format. Entering this English class I had a basic understanding of how to write an APA paper along with the familiarity of a demanding workload. However, the classes I attended at Smyrna High did not require such in depth research as this class. I quickly discovered that a basic understanding was not quite good enough to be successful in this course. As the semester progressed, I began learning more about APA from citations, to references, to general formatting like font.
My academic writing goals are to enhance my strengths in writing and fix my weaknesses. My goals are divided into several processes of writing: generating ideas, developing the content, revising and proofreading the writing, and referencing properly.
Before I came to English 101 I was more of a raw writer than most people. Although I would write my papers filled with great content, I would also have many problems with my grammer and organization. Throughout my time in this class I have developed and trained multiple areas of my writing. Some of the areas that I have improved the most have been grammer, organization, and MLA format. These areas have lead to an evolution in my writing that has given me a new level of understanding in English. Which has provided me with the skills that will endow me to achieve success in english 102.
As a writer I’ve came across many struggles with writing, struggles that have kept me from finding the joy of doing it. During the summer of 2016, I took part in a great opportunity offered by Coppin state University to gain college credits and get ahead of the other incoming freshmen for the 2016- 2017 school year. The program was called SASA (Summer Academic Success Academy). Within this program, I was offered the chance to take English Composition 101. I walked into English Composition 101 with a great deal of confidence. I felt prepared with the help of the college prep English course I took my senior year in high school. In the college prep course, I was able to learn about the many important steps that must be taken when trying to initiate
In conclusion I think that there are more aspects of becoming an effective college level learner than people think. Self-analyzing yourself is very important when trying to become a better writer and reader. Not only meeting the expectations but surpassing them to achieve a new level of writing and reading. Based on the learning outcomes for ENG 101, I will be able to further assess which areas I need preparation in for the rest of the semester. Now knowing these things I can go into my next assignments more confident.
I hope to be able to write at a more advanced level. With becoming a better, I 'd like to learn how to construct different types of writing pieces while enhancing my grammar and vocabulary. In addition, to using a word choice that is specific and memorable. I 'd also like to learn how to structure my content in a more appealing style, rather than the typical MELCON, or comparison structure. I want to leave a better writer and more knowledgeable scholar by the end of the course. Lastly, with these goals I plan to execute and master them to the best of my
