I am often asked what influenced me to become a teacher. To be a special education teacher, one must exhibit patience and flexibility, and have background knowledge on the types of disabilities they will be exposed to throughout their career. I know that I am able to be patient and flexible with children with disabilities because I have been surrounded by children and adults with disabilities all my life. This is the main reason I want to become a special education teacher. I have five younger cousins who have autism, family members who use wheelchairs, and several family members who have schizophrenia and Down syndrome.
