Religion is a universal among human groups. In general, religion is defined as a symbolic system dealing with the relationship of human beings to the supernatural, to divine or spirit beings, or to matters that transcend mundane reality. (Womack) Mystical, spiritual, and enlightened are only a few words that describe the belief system Kabbalah. Kabbalah, which means to receive, is founded on the core belief that all humans were placed on this earth to possess complete goodness and fulfillment by the light of the creator. To grow in joy, happiness and fulfillment is the ultimate achievement for all humans and a factor that all humans can achieve. The history of the Kabbalah belief is one that has been recently been rediscovered within the past 100 years even though it began in 100ce. Rav Shimon Bar Yochai (100 – 160ce) instated this belief system and was held responsible for writing down the “secret wisdom” which is a book that explains how the universe functions. This book is called the Zohar or the Book of Splendor. After Rav Shimon Bar Yochai created and refined his writings, he realized that because the world was not ready for the wisdom thus, it was not revealed and in return, the Rav went into hiding. The teachings in the Zohar are all about becoming closer to the light of the creator and following in his footsteps and one of the most important symbols of the of belief. The Zohar, which was originally in Aramaic, was translated into Hebrew by the same Rav, tells us why the world is such a corrupt place. It goes on to say that because humans have to side that they are always at war with both side that possess good and evil traits. The Kabbalah’s Zohar is known to be a book of codes that was kept in secret for thousands of years. The creators purposely produced a covert message behind a message that will never be found out because throughout time stories always change and so do the meanings. I can’t help but feel as though people can agree with different parts of a story but say that the person telling it got something wrong or left some vital piece of information out therefore, they created something that tells “all of the truth” which is probably there interpretation of the truth which very well may be the actual truth. However, symbols in our world are portrayed to us, they all have meanings that are important to someone somewhere and will be forgotten. They will only circulate from system to another because the stories behind them will never die.
