Chapter one begins by explaining how America was involved in slavery and exploitation. A couple of demonstrations of this is the removal of Native Americans, conquering of the South West Mexicans and slavery. Oddly, the involvement of having other ethnicities conquered and enslaved in our territory is what created ethnic diversity and affluent society. Throughout America’s development there are four stages that can be seen. The stage of settlement was mainly emigrants from new England who didn’t identify themselves with the new country. In 1790 over half the white population was English which shared a disgust for non-British settlers. During America’s expansion if they needed or wanted something from another country or group of people, then America would make treaties/bonds with those people such as the Indians and Mexicans. Eventually these agreements would be overlooked when America was no longer dependent on what they had to offer or longer owned due to America taking possession. However, America still did not have enough workers for agricultural development and turned to chattel slavery which lasted long after being abolished around the 1850s. By the time industrial development began in 1815 there wasn’t only a territorial division of labor based off south, north, etc. but also racial division. With having enough workers for jobs in America now, they shut their boarders in 1924 as the most polyglot nation in history. In other words, America only negotiated and made treaties with other countries if they had something they wanted and once it was theirs whether through agreement, war, acts of terror or breaking of treaties then they no longer took care of that nation or cared about that
