Explain the importance and benefits of assessment for learning. Assessment and its associated feedback are essential to student learning. Well-designed assessment has numerous benefits and it provides a measure of students' progress as it can be a means to engage students with their learning. The children have a sense of responsibility of their learning. They take ownership of their work and become more confident and committed to achieving as they can see for themselves where they are in terms of their learning. It helps students gain confidence and social skills and share the roles of assessing and being assessed equally. One suggested peer assessment activity is to have students work in groups, discussing each other’s’ in-class assignments and ways to improve or change them. Self-assessment gives students the ability to identify their own strengths and weaknesses. It enables them to know what aspects of their learning they need to put more effort into. Feedback ensures that adults are supporting all children to enable them achieve to the best of their potential .The teacher knows whether learning is effective and finds new ways of improving. Research carried out by Ofsted (2011) shows that, assessment improved a practitioner’s awareness of a child’s strengths and weaknesses. Subsequently, this had a positive influence on their planning, as they were able to differentiate and offer adequate support for children. Ofsted believes it to be the best way to improve pupil’s attainment (Ofsted, 2011).

Not every student is the same, and they learn that is it okay to be different and to be proud of the person they are. As the assessor I will assist the learner at this stage by supporting them in choosing the correct assessment method most suited to them, ensuring I am adhering to the awarding organisation regulations. Once a learner has enrolled on the course, as the assessor I will explain to the candidate their assessment plan. This plan will include times and dates that have been set to meet with the learner as well as agreeing on the assessment methods and requirements of the course. This plan will also include individual targets and milestones (predicated unit end dates).
By providing kids with a positive classroom environment they will be able to share their curiosity without being judged. Whether the assessment is formal or informal it is good for so many things. As part of the tasks of teaching, assessment helps us as teachers determine how we should structure our lessons and what ways the students could best learn a certain topic. Peer assessment is where students assess other students through assignments. This innovative teaching empowers learners to be both tutor and tutee. While assessing your peers, you are also conducting self-assessment into your own performance and developing sound judgements while assessing others and providing professional opinions in helping your peers to improve. As a result, sound ideas and proper English grammar are both equally important.
Through peer assessment, students individually assess each other's contribution using a list of criteria. Due to the agreed marking criteria, there is no confusion about the outcome of the assessments. There are many advantages to using peer assessment. Peer assessment encourages student involvement and responsibility.
Another benefit is feedback affords an opportunity for clarification of what is expected. Student performance and achievement increases as they are able to understand the expectations for the specified task or project. This process also helps alleviate frustrations one may feel when unsure of the criteria for quality performance. It is important that teachers give children a fair chance to show their knowledge when assessing. “The purpose of assessment is to provide feedback that can be used to improve student performance” (Orange 2000). Teachers assess children to ensure that they are understanding the material, and to make sure they are learning. For young children, tests should never be the only criteria for assessment. Instructors should always make sure that their assessment is fair.
Through assessment students and teachers are able to determine the level of mastery a student has achieved with standards taught. Both formative and summative assessment should be purposeful and targeted to gain the most accurate data to drive further instruction (Ainsworth, 2010). While this syllabus does a good job of identifying the need for both formal and informal assessments, the way in which this is communicated does not provide enough detail for understanding. Simply listing assessment types does not give any insight into how these assessments fit in the learning process of this course. While some of the assessments mentioned could be common assessments chosen by the school or district to gain insight into the effectiveness of instruction, the inclusion of authentic assessments is most beneficial to students and demonstrates learning in a context closer to that of a work environment (Rovai, 2004). Unfortunately, this particular course, according to this syllabus, relies heavily on quizzes and traditional tests and essays to form the bulk of assessment opportunities. While other activities, such as formative assessments, journaling and discussions are mentioned as possible avenues for scoring, they are given a very low percentage of the overall grade. Assessment is a tool used in the classroom every day. It is used to measure a student’s mastery of a skill or knowledge of a given subject. It is also what demonstrates to the teacher what the students have learned. Educators use that information to determine if they need to re-teach to a specific student, group, or the entire class. They can also use that information to determine the rate of their teaching. Assessments are important because, as teachers, we need to know what difficulties our students have and what needs to be refined for them. While I do believe in assessment and feel that it is one of the key components of teaching, I am more concerned with a child’s process of learning rather than the overall product that comes from it. This is where grades come in for me. Grades determine the students’ level of mastery on a subject, nothing more. Grades should not be the exclusive indicators that a student has learned the information that is presented to them. It is the things a student learns along the way that truly matter and sometimes cannot be measured.
I use assessments to assist me to identify and to develop their learning process. Assessment is not about the final grade, but the learning experience. I would rather have my students know how to look up information and apply knowledge than to memorize it and forget it ten minutes after the test. Learning is a life-long adventure and I want my students to know how to adjust and cope during their adventure. I want my students to have the skills for researching and finding the answer. It is not always that answer which demonstrates learning; it is in the process in which you find the answer that demonstrates learning.
